IMANI’s Kofi Bentil Backs Afenyo Markin As Majority Leader, Calls  For Smooth Transition

Honorable Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, MP Effutu

The Senior Vice President of policy think-thank, IMANI Centre for Policy and Education, Lawyer Kofi Bentil has urged the New Patriotic Party and its Majority Caucus in Parliament to ensure a smooth transition of its leadership in Parliament.

Lawyer Bentil, reacting to reports of an imminent reshuffling in the Majority Caucus in Parliament’s leadership, strongly supported the move to replace the current Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Suame Constituency, Honorable Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu with the Deputy Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu Constituency. Honorable Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin.

Lawyer Kofi Bentil further highlighted the significance of the Central Region in Ghana’s electoral politics and indicated that the region over the years plays a crucial role in the electoral fortunes of any political party that wins the election.

“There is no better person to lead in Parliament than Alex Markin.  Apart from his demonstrated competence and loyalty, he is from the strategic Central Region!  It’s near impossible to lose CR and win the election!!”

Lawyer Kofi Bentil

According to him, the New Patriotic Party selecting a leader in Parliament from such a strategic region, and with no other Member of Parliament but the Honorable Alexander Kwamena Afenyo Markin would enhance the party’s chances in the upcoming December 7 general elections.

Furthermore, Lawyer Kofi Bentil, the Senior Vice President of IMANI Africa Centre for Policy and Education, strongly argued that the Effutu Member of Parliament possesses the required competence and loyalty to the New Patriotic Party’s tradition which makes him fit for the position of the Majority Leader.

Expressing surprise and disappointment, Lawyer Bentil questioned the resistance to the Effutu Member of Parliament’s promotion to the Majority leadership role, particularly from some Members of Parliament who are exiting Parliament.

He thus urged the current Majority leader and Member of Parliament for Suame Constituency in the Ashanti Region, the Honorable Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu to make way for the Effutu Member of Parliament, Honorable Alexander Kwamena Afenyo Markin to be made the Majority Leader for the good of the party.

Lawyer Kofi Bentil further asserted that such admission by the current Majority leader, the Honorable Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu would not only ensure a smooth transition but also be a fitting end to his distinguished parliamentary career.

NPP Urged To Promote Regional Balance In Its Leadership

Moreover, Lawyer Kofi Bentil argued that based on reports and discussions within the ruling New Patriotic Party that suggest the likelihood of the party selecting someone from the Ashanti Region to be the running mate to the Vice President and the party’s flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, it is therefore important to ensure a regional balance in the party’s leadership.

“I really thought uncle Kyei will be gracious about this, and leave in glory after his illustrious career in Parliament. It’s not too late. Uncle Kyei Please let Alex move up, be the one to hand your seat to him graciously!!”

Lawyer Kofi Bentil

Lawyer Kofi Bentil also urged all stakeholders including the New Patriotic Party’s Members of Parliament and the party leadership to prioritize the greater good of the party and the nation over individual interests.

In addition, Lawyer Kofi Bentil admonished the New Patriotic Party national leadership to offer the Vice President and the party’s flagbearer the freedom to make crucial decisions that may have an impact on the party in the 2024 general elections.

Lawyer Kofi Bentil concluded by emphasizing that, the New Patriotic Party having the Honorable Alexander Kwamena Afenyo Markin as its Majority Leader in Parliament would greatly contribute to the party’s success in the 2024 general elections.
