Former president John Dramani Mahama, is currently in the Volta Region; Ho, to launch his campaign, in an effort to become the National Democratic Congress’ flagbearer, in the general elections of 2024.
‘Building the Ghana we want together’ is the theme for launching his campaign, which is taking place in the Cedi Auditorium, at the University of Health and Allied Sciences in Ho, in the Volta Region.
After losing the previous two elections in 2016 and 2020, John Mahama, intends to run for President again in the 2024 polls. The former President, however, is confident that he has what it takes, to assist the nation out of its current economic crisis.
Mahama’s former campaign manager, Joshua Alabi, and some Regional Chairmen of the National Democratic Congress, picked up Presidential nomination forms on his behalf. Observers, are backing calls for Mr. Mahama, to go unopposed in the NDC’s upcoming Presidential election.
Although the rules of the NDC permit an open contest for all qualified members of the party, allowing Mahama to go unopposed, they believe, will save the party both resources and time.
A political scientist and lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr. Abdul Jalilu Ateku, suggested he does not foresee any significant threat to the victory of Mahama in the NDC’s primaries. Dr. Ateku, anticipated that the former President, will win by a landslide victory in the internal polls. He said none of the Presidential hopefuls, who have declared their intentions to contest on the ticket of the opposition NDC, comes out stronger than Mr. Mahama.
But the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), has said it is not perturbed about the decision of John Dramani Mahama, to run for President. Director of Communications for the NPP, Richard Ahiagbah, said the party was not worried about a man, who has no track record to show when he was President.
“We have beaten him twice, so you just conclude for yourself if we are afraid of him. It is all mathematical, and we have defeated him twice. He is even afraid to plainly declare whether he is going to contest or not. We are ready for him.”

Mahama- a brother, a friend and a father
Currently, the Cedi Auditorium, at the University of Health and Allied Sciences in Ho; in the Volta Region, is currently packed with members of the NDC, MP’s, spectators and critics; who are all ready to listen to Mahama, speak of his plans for the party and nation at large, once he is made the flagbearer of the NDC.
The former Regional Chairman, Kwadwo Gyapong, welcomed the people that are present. He convinced them that John Dramani Mahama, was their brother, friend and father; as such, he deserved to be the flagbearer of the NDC, but he had only problem, which is the percentage of votes, Mahama would pick up during the voting procedure.
“I have a problem like I said, I don’t want those guys who are coming to have even two percent (2%), of the votes. If you have never been an MP before, you can’t be a flagbearer for NDC or become President. My brother, if you want to be the President by leading the NDC, you have to get a green-light from your constituency first, and then you can get the votes. When I look at those contesting Mahama, they do not deserve this.
“Mahama has attended funerals all over; today he is in Oti, tomorrow he is Ho, he has been everywhere. I would advise the other candidates, that charity begins at home. Have you won the Ashanti seat before, Dr. Duffuor? So, the fact that you have not won that before, you should not contest for flagbearership.”
Kwadwo Gyapong
He claimed, that the NDC respected hard work and commitment and as such, Mahama was the best person who had not faulted in these areas. He then said Mahama should win the seat unopposed.
“So, on behalf of all the regional chairmen, we support John Dramani Mahama. This is not a time we should talk about this; I cannot be taken as a liar. I, as the Dean of chairmen, together with all chairmen available, endorse and support John Dramani Mahama.”
Kwadwo Gyapong
Mawutor Abgavitor, Ibrahim Tanko, Alhaji Bonabi, Abdul Nazir, Mohammed Abdul Salam, and many other regional chairmen of the various regions in Ghana, mounted the stage and showed their support for Mahama, as the NDC Flagbearer and President of Ghana, come 2024 elections.
