Emmanuel Nii Ashie Moore involved in investor abuse allegations

Emmanuel Nii Ashie Moore

The legal team representing Emmanuel Nii Ashie Moore, the Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has firmly rejected a series of claims circulating in the media that accuse him of fraud, abuse of political power, and misconduct.

The accusations, brought forth by Singaporean national Toh You Kang, allege that Moore received $800,000 in exchange for securing contracts from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), and that the funds were linked to political purposes.

However, Moore’s legal representative, Gideon Tettey Tetteh Esq., firmly rejected the accusations, clarifying that Moore did not receive $800,000 from Toh You Kang to secure contracts from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

Instead, he asserted that Kang posed as a credible investor and ended up defrauding Moore and his business associates.

“Allegations that Mr. Moore solicited funds from Mr. Kang for political purposes, particularly in connection with the 2024 NDC campaign, are patently false. Fundraising efforts for the campaign were conducted transparently by the ‘Monitor and Win’ committee to boost grassroots participation and reward hardworking party members.”

The team also clarified that Moore had reported Mr. Kang to the Ghana Police Service in May 2025 for defrauding by false pretences.

Following a preliminary investigation, Mr. Kang was remanded in lawful custody, where he has remained for five weeks. Subsequently, another complaint related to alleged theft was filed with the Economic and Commercial Crime Office.

The two cases, totaling over $5.8 million in alleged fraud, were consolidated and referred to the Attorney General’s Department for legal guidance.

According to Tetteh, the legal processes have been conducted transparently and in accordance with Ghanaian law.

He stressed that there had been no interference, political or otherwise, during the investigation.

Moore’s legal team also addressed claims that Mr. Kang had been subjected to assault or unlawful detention.

According to Tetteh, Kang, a frequent visitor to Ghana, was arrested in accordance with the law following a formal criminal complaint.

He emphasized that there is no evidence to support allegations of assault, extortion, or coercion at any point during or after the arrest.

“At all times, Mr. Kang has had access to multiple lawyers, has not been denied communication with family (and with his mobile phone whilst in Police custody), and has been treated in full compliance with Ghanaian law and human rights standards.”

Extortion Image Allegations Rejected

Furthermore, the legal team strongly rejected allegations suggesting that Moore shared semi-nude images of Mr. Kang in an attempt to extort his family.

They dismissed these claims as baseless, malicious, and defamatory. They also emphasized that Mr. Kang has been held in lawful custody throughout the ongoing legal proceedings.

“Mr. Emmanuel Nii Ashie Moore has demonstrated unwavering trust in Ghana’s legal institutions by submitting himself to due process and refraining from any self-help or political manipulation.”

Accordingly, Tetteh emphasized that national institutions should never serve as safe havens for individuals who take advantage of diplomatic, commercial, or political goodwill to carry out financial crimes.

The legal team also issued a broader warning, saying that unsubstantiated claims of political interference or state abuse “serve only to undermine public confidence in our democracy and institutions.”

They urged the public to treat such narratives with the caution they deserve and reiterated that in Ghana, “no individual is above the law, nor is any person beneath its protection.”

Transparent Legal Process Urged Amid Aishe Moore Case

Meanwhile, Professor Stephen Kwaku Asare, legal expert, responded to the legal team’s explanation by acknowledging the value of the clarification provided, while also emphasizing the need for an impartial and independent investigation.

He stressed that the matter extends beyond simple criminal allegations and raises broader concerns related to governance, campaign financing, investor protection, and the potential misuse of political influence.

“Such an investigation will help to establish the facts, safeguard the integrity of our institutions, and offer both parties, Mr. Emmanuel Nii Ashie Moore and Mr. Toh You Kang, a fair and transparent platform to substantiate their respective accounts.”

Professor Asare further emphasized that the case presents serious reputational risks not only for the individuals involved but also for Ghana as a nation.

He underscored that the appropriate way to handle such a sensitive matter is through openness and transparency, rather than defensiveness or political division.

In his view, approaching it solely as a private legal battle diminishes the broader significance tied to public interest.

He cautioned that allowing issues related to political accountability and trust to be buried in private legal proceedings could erode deterrence, embolden misconduct, and send troubling signals to both the public and potential investors.

“Let a credible, independent inquiry establish the truth. That is how democracies are strengthened—by confronting difficult questions through lawful means, not by avoiding them.”

Professor Stephen Kwaku Asare

The case involving Emmanuel Nii Ashie Moore and Toh You Kang has raised serious legal and public interest concerns that extend beyond individual allegations.

As calls for an independent inquiry grow, the resolution of this matter will serve as a test of Ghana’s commitment to transparency, justice, and institutional accountability.
