Mahama Redefines Leadership with Focus on Accountability, Humility

President John Dramani Mahama is making a concerted effort to reshape public perception of his leadership during his second term, according to Dr. John Osae Kwapong, a research fellow at the Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana).

Speaking in an interview, Dr. Kwapong highlighted Mahama’s deliberate approach, marked by calls for humility, accountability, and prudent governance, as key indicators of a leadership style distinct from his first tenure.

Dr. Kwapong noted that Mahama’s current administration reflects lessons learned from his first presidency (2012-2017), his electoral defeat in 2016, and his subsequent political journey leading to victory in the 2024 elections.

“Overall, I believe President Mahama is setting the right tone. He wants this presidency to look, feel, and be appreciated differently than his first.

“The statements and sentiments he is expressing—such as advising against arrogance, urging officials to listen to the public, and demonstrating commitment—are all aimed at shaping a new perception of his leadership.”

This shift comes amid ongoing debates and reflections on Mahama’s previous administration, particularly concerning the power outages, known locally as “Dumsor,” which significantly impacted businesses and households, leading to job losses and widespread criticism.

Mahama’s efforts appear rooted in a reflective understanding of past shortcomings. During his first term, his administration faced numerous challenges, including economic downturns, allegations of corruption, and the crippling energy crisis. These factors contributed to his 2016 electoral defeat.

However, Mahama’s political resilience and strategic recalibration have been evident since his return to power. His current focus on humility and accountability suggests a leader intent on learning from history and avoiding the pitfalls of his previous tenure.

Mahama’s Youth-Centric Approach to Appointments

Dr. Kwapong emphasized that Mahama’s approach to political appointments reflects a broader strategy to rejuvenate leadership within the government. The president’s selection of younger leaders signals not only a generational shift but also a commitment to nurturing the future of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the nation.

“In terms of his appointments, two things stand out.

“One is the generation he is tapping into, which suggests he is not only thinking about this administration but also the long-term future of his party and the next generation of leaders.”

Dr. John Osae Kwapong, a research fellow at the Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana)

This strategy is evident in Mahama’s directives to newly sworn-in appointees, where he has consistently stressed the importance of integrity, hard work, and responsiveness to the needs of Ghanaians.

By fostering a leadership culture grounded in public service rather than political patronage, Mahama aims to build a legacy of effective governance.

One of the hallmarks of Mahama’s second-term strategy is his emphasis on fiscal responsibility and modesty. In a clear departure from the perceived extravagance of past administrations, he has implemented measures to curb unnecessary government spending.

While Mahama’s efforts to rebrand, his leadership have garnered support from sections of the public and political commentators, challenges remain. Public skepticism, especially regarding issues from his first term, continues to shape political discourse.

However, Dr. Kwapong believes that Mahama’s proactive engagement with both the public and government institutions demonstrate a genuine desire to build a new political narrative.

“The reality is that leadership perception is shaped not just by words but by consistent actions.

“President Mahama’s ability to maintain this tone of humility and accountability throughout his term will ultimately determine how differently his presidency is perceived.”

Dr. John Osae Kwapong, a research fellow at the Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana)

President Mahama’s conscious efforts to reshape public perception through humility, accountability, and youth-centered leadership reflect a strategic shift from his previous administration.

As he navigates the complexities of governance in his second term, the true measure of his leadership will lie in his ability to translate these ideals into tangible outcomes that improve the lives of Ghanaians and strengthen the country’s democratic institutions.
