Mr Speaker Has Crossed the Be careful Line – Ahiagbah

Richard Ahiagbah Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP)

The Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah has criticized the National Democratic Congress (NDC) over an allegedly devised plan to obstruct government business in Parliament.

According to Ahiagbah, the strategy, revealed in a secret document, outlined how the NDC minority seeks to leverage parliamentary power to disrupt legislative processes.

He emphasized that the NDC’s tactics have been operational since 2021, describing them as a deliberate attempt to frustrate the ruling government’s agenda.

Ahiagbah drew attention to Chapter 2 of the secret document, which he claimed provides strategies for the NDC to maximize its parliamentary control.

“The 2020 election resulted in an unprecedented situation in Ghanaian politics, with an evenly split parliament with the NDC and NPP holding equal seats. The equilibrium creates a powerful opportunity for the NDC to, one, influence, two, delay or outright block the government’s legislative agenda.”

Richard Ahiagbah Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP)

Ahiagbah argued that this strategy has been in full effect since the beginning of the 8th Parliament in 2021.

Collaboration with the Speaker of Parliament

“So, you have a situation where the NDC, for some odd reason, decides that it wants to be majority. And so, therefore, in partnership with Speaker, Speaker is actively aiding that seeming by the NDC in Parliament.”

Richard Ahiagbah Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP)

He accused Speaker Bagbin of failing to uphold his duty as a statesman and working to further the interests of the NDC at the expense of national progress.

“The point that ought to be made is that this is not an isolated incident. This is part of a coordinated effort by their own design outlined in these books to ensure that they use every means available to them, fair or foul, to affect, to disrupt, and obstruct government business.”

In Ahiagbah’s view, the Speaker has tranpassed by allowing his actions to be influenced by political bias.

“Mr Speaker has crossed the be careful line. In other words, Mr Speaker is beyond redemption as a statesman who ought to help glue Parliament together and see to government business to further the lots of Ghanaians. Mr Speaker, it’s irredeemable.”

He emphasized that the Speaker’s decision to adjourn Parliament sine die (without a set return date) was not a coincidence but rather part of the NDC’s broader strategy.

“Even after the Supreme Court has spoken to stay his actions, the machinations that they put up, all the orchestrations they are putting up is designed to ensure that no government business is done. They tried that from 2021.”

A Desperate Last Push by the NDC

Ahiagbah described the NDC’s parliamentary strategy as a “desperate push” by a party realizing that its efforts are failing. However, as the 2024 general elections approach, Ahiagbah suggested that the NDC is growing increasingly desperate and is resorting to extreme measures to achieve its objectives.

“They’ve been doing it. It hasn’t worked. But in these last days, they are purposed to do whatever they can, including disrupting and bringing Parliament to a halt. And so, Mr Speaker’s adjournment of Parliament sine die is not by accident. It’s by design.”

Richard Ahiagbah Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP)

He concluded by predicting that the NDC’s plot is ultimately doomed to fail and that the party is likely to lose the 2024 upcoming election.

Ahiagbah’s remarks highlighted the deep divisions in Ghana’s 8th Parliament, where the balance of power is finely poised between the NDC and the NPP.

His accusations suggested that the NDC’s parliamentary strategy, allegedly outlined in a secret document, is a calculated effort to undermine the government’s ability to govern effectively.

As the 2024 elections draw near, the battle for control of Parliament is likely to intensify, with both parties vying for supremacy in the legislative arena.
