NAGRAT President, Angel Carbonu, has stated that the Assistant Headmaster’s actions were deeply disappointing.
He emphasized that using physical punishment by the Assistant Headmaster was inappropriate.
Mr. Carbonu questioned the Assistant Headmaster’s decision to use force, rather than following the existing school policies, such as reporting the student to the disciplinary committee.
Also, he stressed that instead of garnering unfavorable media attention, the teaching profession should concentrate on topics like improving teachers’ working circumstances.
The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) harshly criticized the episode and urged educators to avoid courting controversy. The event called into question how teachers should enforce punishment, as well as the larger problem of improving working conditions for teachers.
The racket started when a viral video showed the student making claims that an assistant headmaster beat her up for leaving the school grounds without permission. Surprisingly, it has been reported that the incident left the student partially blind.
This episode, which happened at Nkwatia Presby Senior High School in Ghana’s Eastern Region, has sparked a national discussion about the proper forms of students discipline.
The Ghana Education Service (GES) however, acted quickly to address the incident. GES terminated the Assistant Headmaster’s employment and harshly denounced his behavior. It also emphasized that the safety and well-being of students and teachers is the main duty of school administrators, especially Headmasters and their aides.
Also, the Eastern Regional Director of Education has gotten in contact with Nkwatia Presby Senior High School administration and security organizations, in order to conduct an investigation into the attack committed against the student by the school’s assistant headmaster.
The Assistant Headmaster at Nkwatia Presby Senior High School (SHS) is currently under investigation for reportedly hitting a student who allegedly disobeyed school regulations in a recent incident that has shocked the Ghanaian educational system.
According to the GES, the pupil is reportedly receiving medical attention and counseling. The Service reaffirmed its commitment to provide all students in the nation with a safe and secure learning environment.
Assaulted Student Narrates Ordeal
The female student at Nkwatia Presby Senior High School (SHS) who claims that the school assistant headmaster slapped her and left her partially blind has finally described her ordeal.
Diana Mensah, the victim, claimed that when the assistant headmaster assaulted her, she reported the event to her house mistress, who reportedly merely provided her Tylenol. She further stated that after a relative persuaded her to do so, she reported the event to the Ghana Police Service.
Diana Mensah stated that when she and the Police tried to apprehend the suspect, he went into hiding.
“I went to my house mistress to report the incident, after the assistant headmaster slapped me. But she only gave me paracetamol and asked me to report back after assembly the next day. So, the following day, I went back and told her I had a sleepless night but she gave me paracetamol again.
“There wasn’t any improvement in my condition, so I had to call my uncle and he asked me to report to the Police. When I reported to the Police, they assigned an officer to accompany me to the school, but the assistant headmaster was not around. Immediately the Police left, he also came back.”

Additionally, the student revealed that the school’s headmistress had reprimanded her for calling the Police after the event.
“My house mistress subsequently called me that the headmistress wanted to see me. When I got there, she asked me the ages of my parents, and further asked me whether I could arrest my father if he scolds me, saying that what I did was not right.”

She stated that she is getting better from what happened but revealed that she is still unable to sleep because of the bruises and pain.
