Nana Akomea Backs Early NPP Flagbearer Poll

A leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akomea, has thrown his weight behind the National Council’s decision to fast-track the party’s flagbearer election, describing the move as timely and necessary to restore unity and stability within the party ahead of the 2028 general elections.

In a strong statement, Nana Akomea contended that the NPP’s current state of disarray is largely due to the intensifying battle over who becomes the party’s next presidential candidate.

According to him, holding the flagbearer election early is the best course of action to stem further division and chaos that have plagued the party since it entered opposition.

He noted that the overwhelming endorsement by the party’s National Council to prioritise the selection of a flagbearer is exactly what the NPP needs at this critical juncture.

“The party will never close ranks in unity until the flagbearer election is over. That is a fact. In the past few months in opposition, the dominant news about the party has been about the flagbearership”.

Nana Akomea

Nana Akomea lamented that stories in the media have increasingly been dominated by intra-party tensions, with various aspirants engaging in what he called “religious baiting” and setting up “exploratory committees” rather than strengthening the opposition front.

He also cited a litany of unfortunate incidents believed to be rooted in the flagbearer rivalry. For instance, he referred to how even routine activities like the party’s “Thank You” tour were nearly derailed by tensions among rival camps.

More worryingly, he recounted that the granting of bail to a detained regional chairman was interpreted by some party insiders as being influenced by loyalties to a particular flagbearer aspirant.

These occurrences, he argued, are symptomatic of a party caught in the grip of a deep internal battle — one that risks weakening its electoral fortunes if allowed to fester.

NPP Risks Disintegration

Nana Akomea expressed grave concern that without a decisive resolution to the flagbearer issue, the NPP risks further disintegration from the grassroots level to the national executive body.

“This flagbearer rivalry would divide the ranks of the party from polling station elections right up to the national executive elections”.

Given the urgency of the situation, Nana Akomea insisted that prolonging the flagbearer campaign would only deepen the acrimony, finger-pointing, and mudslinging that have already scarred the party.

“We cannot afford another two years of acrimony, accusations, counter-accusations, insults, backbiting, and division,” he argued. The party, he said, is in a precarious position and must act swiftly to consolidate its base and present a coherent alternative to the ruling NDC.

He called on all party members, especially the various aspirants and their supporters, to embrace the National Council’s decision and prepare to rally behind whoever emerges as the party’s chosen leader.

Nana Akomea believes that early elections will not only inject leadership and direction into the NPP’s operations but also provide a renewed sense of purpose and focus in its efforts to recapture power.

“Let’s get it over quickly to bring leadership, stability and focus — not only to our other elections but most importantly to present an alternative to the NDC,” he urged.

In closing, Nana Akomea saluted the National Council for showing decisive leadership at a time of turbulence. “Bravo to our National Council,” he declared, commending the body for taking steps that he believes will ultimately steer the party back on course.

The NPP, which has struggled to assert itself effectively in opposition following its defeat in the 2024 elections, is under pressure to regroup and present a strong front ahead of the next general elections.

Some political analysts have long warned that unresolved tensions within the party could impair its ability to challenge the NDC, which has gained momentum since taking office.

With the flagbearer decision now set to take centre stage earlier than previously anticipated, it remains to be seen how the NPP’s internal dynamics will evolve in the coming months.

But for Nana Akomea and others who support the accelerated timeline, the hope is that this move will end the infighting, re-energise the base, and provide a credible platform from which to mount a political comeback.
