The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced the annulment of its parliamentary primaries held in the Amenfi Central Constituency on 13th May 2023, following litigation at the High Court in Sekondi.
This decision was made during a Functional Executive Committee (FEC) meeting held on Tuesday, 3rd September 2024, marking a significant development in the party’s internal electoral process.
Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress, in a statement, conveyed the decision of the Functional Executive Committee of the party, underscoring the party’s commitment to bring finality to the legal action.
“This election has been the subject of litigation at the High Court, Sekondi. In the reliefs (c), (d) and (e) of the Plaintiffs’ action, they seek from the court, the annulment of the parliamentary primary election result and an order for rerun of the election”.
Hon. Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, General Secretary NDC
Given the above, Mr Kwetey indicated that the National Democratic Congress Functional Executive Committee has chosen to preempt the court’s ruling by annulling the election and ordering a rerun in the Amenfi Central Constituency.
In the statement, Mr Kwetey emphasized that the annulment is effective immediately, with plans in place to organize a fresh election.
“The party has decided to open fresh nominations for the conduct of the primaries in Amenfi Central Constituency”, the statement read.

Timeline and Key Dates for Rerun
The National Democratic Congress General Secretary went ahead and provided a detailed timetable for the upcoming rerun, starting with the opening and sale of nominations on Friday, 6th September 2024.
According to him, the nomination forms can be picked from the office of the Deputy General Secretary in charge of Administration and Finance at the party’s headquarters.
On the filing of nominations, the National Democratic Congress chief scribe announced that the activity would take place on Saturday, 7th September 2024, between 7:00 am and 9:00 am.
Announcing the date for the vetting of candidates who will participate in the rerun of the party’s parliamentary elections in the Amenfi Central Constituency, Mr Kwetey indicated that the activity would take place on Saturday, 7th September 2024, between 10:00 am and 1:00 pm
Additionally, Mr Kwetey announced that the opposition party has set Saturday, 7th September 2024, between 3:00 pm and 5:00 pm as the date for the appeal process for its rerun of parliamentary primaries in the Amenfi Central Constituency.
The election, he noted is scheduled to take place on Sunday, 8th September 2024 to elect a parliamentary candidate for the Amenfi Central Constituency to represent the NDC in the December 7 upcoming parliamentary election.
The rerun of the parliamentary primaries in Amenfi Central is expected to be closely watched, with candidates who had previously contested in the annulled elections potentially seeking fresh mandates.
The NDC’s decision to open a new nomination process ensures that the primaries will start afresh, giving all candidates an equal opportunity to participate.
This rerun is a critical step in maintaining the party’s internal democratic processes and ensuring the legitimacy of its candidate selection ahead of the December 2024 general elections.
In June this year, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) suspended several executives, including its Constituency Chairman in the Amenfi Central Constituency.
The suspension, announced by the party’s General Secretary, Honorable Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, stems from alleged anti-party activities by the said executives of the party in the Amenfi Central Constituency that led to significant internal disruptions.
Mr Kwetey recounted that these executives in question were reportedly involved in actions that resulted in a High Court placing an injunction on Joana Cudjoe Gyan, the then elected parliamentary candidate of the opposition National Democratic Congress in the upcoming general in the Amenfi Central Constituency.
The opposition party’s swift decision to annul the previously held primaries and chart a clear course for fresh elections underscores its commitment to resolving disputes and ensuring transparency within its ranks.
