The Opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Asuogyaman Constituency in the Eastern region has denied claims by the Chief Executive Officer of the National Youth Authority, Pius Enam Hadzide, that the party and its Member of Parliament, Thomas Ampen Nyarko were invited by the Volta River Authority for a simulation and sensitizations exercise ahead of the Akosombo dam spillage.
In a statement released by the Deputy Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress in the Asuogyaman Constituency, Mr Felix Bonney described the claims by the New Patriotic Party aspiring parliamentary candidate for the Constituency as false.
According to Mr Felix Bonney, the allegations by Mr Pius Enam Hadzide against the National Democratic Congress is a deliberate attempt to apportion blame for the severe destruction that has caused residents and communities affected by the Akosombo dam spillage.
“This allegation by Pius Enam Hadzide at the time our people are suffering is frivolous and borne out of callousness on his part and on the part of the government, who have consistently shown that they have no regard for the people whose sacrifices in the past and even today gave Ghana the energy we have enjoyed all these years. It must be said however, that, at this point, where people’s lives, livelihoods and huge investments are threatened, the best we should be doing is to direct our efforts towards relieving the plight of the people who have become suddenly vulnerable through no fault of theirs”.
Felix Bonney
The Deputy Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress in the Asuogyaman Constituency further asserted that no other Members of Parliament within the affected communities received such invitations from the Volta River Authority.
NDC Calls For More Support For Akosombo Dam Flood Affected Victims
Moreover, Mr. Felix Bonney stressed the need for a united effort to provide the necessary support and assistance to the several residents who were severely hit by the Akosombo dam spillage-induced flood rather than apportioning blame and throwing allegations.
Again, Mr Felix Bonney bemoaned the lack of tangible action by the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) and the government in alleviating the suffering of victims in Asuogyaman besides data collection efforts by NADMO.
He highlighted the proactive efforts of the Member of Parliament for Asuogyaman Constituency, Honorable Thomas Ampem Nyarko, who has been visiting affected areas within the constituency.
According to Mr Felix Bonney the Member of Parliament of Asuogyaman; Hon. Thomas Ampem has constantly visited the affected areas within the Constituency and has been supporting them both financially and with relief items.
“The most recent of these supports was on Saturday 21st October, 2023 when the Honorable MP together with the Chairman of the NDC, Hon. Johnson Asiedu Nketia visited three of the most affected communities and donated relief items and cash to the victims. Rather unfortunately, apart from going around in the name of collecting data, the people are yet to see any tangible action taken by NADMO and the Government of which Pius is part, in alleviating the suffering of the people in Asuogyaman.”

Additionally, Mr Felix Bonney underlined the significance of taking positive action and offering assistance to individuals who have suffered because of the ongoing dam spill.
He thus advised Mr Pius Enam Hadzide to focus his efforts on National Television to ask for assistance from the government and other institutions for the affected victims.
Mr Pius Enam Hadzide alleged that Mr Thomas Ampem Nyarko declined an invitation by the Volta River Authority (VRA) to participate in a simulation exercise on the Akosombo Dam Spillage during a media discussion on the flood situation on Wednesday, October 25 2023.
