The National Democratic Congress, in a significant development, has reinstated Prof. Richard Kofi Asiedu as the Central Regional Chairman of the party.
The General Secretary of the party, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, in a statement, pointed out that the decision comes after a comprehensive review and deliberation by the Functional Executive Committee (FEC) of the party following the recommendations of its National Disciplinary Committee.
“The National Disciplinary Committee submitted its report and recommendations on your suspension to the General Secretary which among other things, highlighted your admission of guilt, show of remorse, and promise not to ever engage in anything that will constitute anti-party behavior”.

The opposition National Democratic Congress General Secretary further pointed out that the reinstatement decision was taken during the party’s Functional Executive Committee meeting held on August 1, 2024.
He indicated that the committee, after a thorough examination of the disciplinary report, concluded to reinstate Prof. Asiedu in accordance with Article 48(9)(f) of the party’s constitution.
He added that the provision also allows for the lifting of suspensions under specific circumstances, which were met by Prof. Asiedu’s case.
Highlighting the key points from the National Democratic Congress’s Functional Executive Committee’s meeting, Mr. Kwetey mentioned that Prof. Asiedu’s suspension period has officially elapsed, adding that Professor Asiedu is “reinstated as the Central Regional Chairman with immediate effect”.
Caution and Oversight
Furthermore, Mr Kwetey, in conveying the opposition party’s Functional Executive Committee’s directives, underscored the importance of party cohesion and unity in the Central Region, particularly with the upcoming December 7 elections.
He pointed out that Prof. Asiedu’s future conduct will be closely monitored to ensure it does not jeopardize the party’s prospects in the crucial region, admonishing Professor Asiedu to be of good behavior.
Additionally, Mr Kwetey indicated that Prof. Asiedu has been requested to attend the National Democratic Congress’s next Functional Executive Committee meeting for further discussions.
The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, communicated these decisions in an official letter addressed to Prof. Asiedu and copied it to the Central Regional General Secretary and all Constituency Chairmen of the National Democratic Congress in the Central Region.
The letter also highlighted the significance of maintaining party unity and the leadership’s vigilance in overseeing regional activities.
This move is seen as a strategic step by the NDC to bolster its organizational strength and unity ahead of the crucial general elections.
The Central Region, being a significant battleground, requires stable and cohesive leadership to enhance the party’s electoral fortunes.
Prof. Asiedu’s suspension had been a subject of considerable discussion within the party circles.
Mr Kwetey, in a statement on July 3rd announced the suspension of the party’s Central Regional Chairman Prof. Richard Asiedu.
Similar to the disciplinary action meted out to the party’s Central Regional Chairman, Mr Kwetey also announced the suspension of the Assin Central Constituency Secretary, Sadique Broni for one-month and referral to the National Disciplinary Committee on charges of anti-party conduct.
The reinstatement of Professor Richard Asiedu marks a pivotal moment for the NDC in the Central Region.
As the party gears up for the December 7 elections, maintaining cohesion and capitalizing on strong leadership will be essential for its success.
