NPP Ex- Chairman Pushes for Comprehensive Reforms

Mr. Sammy Crabbe Former Second Vice Chairman of the NPP

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) suffered a woeful defeat in the just ended 2024 general elections, a defeat many labelled as a complete annihilation of the party by Ghanaians. As a result, that has sparked intense introspection among party members.

To this effect, Former Second Vice Chairman of the NPP, Mr. Sammy Crabbe, has emerged as a vocal advocate for a change, criticizing his party’s lack of a duty-of-care for members.

According to him, this negligence undermined morale and participation, creating a disconnect between the leadership and grassroots supporters.

Mr. Crabbe argued that this disconnect was symptomatic of deeper structural issues within the NPP. He emphasized;

“The constitution is a problem, It’s a problem in the sense that, you see there are around 28 aims and objectives, and there’s nothing in the 28 that talks about the party’s duty of care. Nobody builds an organization without telling its workers and stakeholders how it is going to reward them, how it’s going to take care of them. It is not there.”

Consequently, Mr. Crabbe called for a complete internal structural reform of the party’s framework, starting with how it treats its members. He added;

“Some people invest their minds; they die; some of them get divorced because it’s intensive. And then at the end of the day, one man and his wife and his children and his family get to make all the decisions. To me, it doesn’t make sense. As a business person, it doesn’t make sense.”

However, Mr. Crabbe revealed his intention to contest for the NPP chairmanship in 2026, stating that his experience and vision put him in a strong position to lead the party through a much-needed transformation. He stated that he has started his ground works. He added;

‘It is looking good, the network, getting people together – and now that the debacle has happened, people are now seeing the reasons why these [reforms] must be done.’’

“I want to amend the constitution to state what it would do for its workers,” he asserted, outlining his vision for a more inclusive and accountable party. “You convene a constitutional amendment conference and then do that,’’ he argued.

“It’s not important or necessary for me and certain people to like each other, It’s okay for them not to like me, and I will expect that they will criticize what I put on the table.”

Rebuilding the New Patriotic Party (NPP)

Mr. Crabbe’s call for reform extends beyond the constitution to the broader culture of the NPP. He reiterated;

“What I want us to do is to sit down, reengineer, reinvent, and then put these things at the heart of what we do – because it was apathy [that led to the defeat]. The question you ask yourself is, why the apathy? The apathy came to be because, people felt that they had chopped and left them. I knew that was going to be problematic.”

Mr. Crabbe believes that addressing these issues is essential to reviving the party’s fortunes and ensuring its long-term viability.

His critique of the NPP’s structure and governance highlights the challenges that contributed to the party’s crushing defeat in the 2024 elections.

Moreover, his call for constitutional reforms and a renewed focus on member welfare presents a blueprint for rebuilding the party.

Meanwhile, as he prepares to contest for the chairmanship in 2026, Mr. Crabbe’s vision for a more inclusive and accountable NPP offers a glimmer of hope for a party in search of redemption.
