H.E President John Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has advocated for peace and national unity in Bawku.

Addressing recent security concerns in the Upper East Region, particularly the Bawku ethnic conflict, Mahama expressed deep concern over the ongoing tensions and called for renewed efforts to resolve them peacefully.

“Indeed, there can be no progress without peace. My statement bears repeating because in Bawku, the ethnic conflict persists as a painful reminder of the threat of insecurity in this region to our progress.”

The President lamented the devastating impact of conflicts on communities, explaining that violence leaves behind scars that hinder development. He stressed that programs aimed at improving the lives of Ghanaians would mean nothing if some communities were left behind due to conflict.

“What future do we promise our children if they inherit walls of mistrust instead of bridges of hope? A nation divided by past wounds cannot march forward into the promise of tomorrow.”

Addressing the ongoing mediation efforts to resolve the Bawku conflict, Mahama praised the role of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, in facilitating dialogue among the factions involved. He expressed optimism that a peaceful resolution could be achieved through sincere engagement.

“Let us choose peace not out of fear, but out of strength, not as a surrender, but as the highest act of courage to secure our collective quest for progress.”

“Let history remember us not for the battles that we fought against one another, but for the unity we forged in the face of disagreement. Peace can, and peace must, reign in Bawku and surrounding areas. I wish to take this opportunity to condemn the killing of a member of the Ghana Army recently in Bawku. The members of the Ghana Armed Forces in the conflict zone are peacekeepers who have been sent there to protect life, limb, and property. It is unacceptable for them to become targets of a conflict to which they are not a party.”

At the same time, he criticized the excessive use of force by some military personnel, which led to the assault and injury of civilians. While acknowledging the emotional response to the loss of a comrade, he urged security agencies to exercise restraint and use intelligence-led approaches to bring perpetrators to justice.

He extended his sympathies to both the family of the deceased soldier and the civilians who suffered injuries during the military counteraction.

Ensuring Equitable Development for All

Beyond security concerns, Mahama reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring equitable national development, stating that every region deserved a fair share of national resources. He pledged to prioritize investment in key sectors such as infrastructure, agriculture, healthcare, education, and social welfare.

“I pledge to the people of the Upper East Region that when the national cake is being shared, you will receive your fair portion.”

H.E President John Mahama

Mahama concluded his speech with a passionate call for national unity, urging Ghanaians to work together in building a future where every citizen has equal opportunities. He emphasized the need to move beyond geographical barriers and ensure that development is inclusive.

“Let us reject cynicism and embrace hope. Let us shun division and champion cohesion. Let us work together to build a country where the dreams of our farmers, traders, teachers, and youth are not just heard but are actively supported.”

“Our future is bright, and together, we’ll make Ghana a land of equal opportunity, shared prosperity, and lasting peace. May God bless our homeland, Ghana, and make our nation great and strong.”

H.E President John Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama’s address in the Upper East Region was a strong reaffirmation of his commitment to peace, development, and national unity.

By condemning violence, advocating for peaceful mediation, and pledging equitable development, President Mahama demonstrated his vision for a Ghana where every citizen, regardless of location or background, benefits from national progress.

His call for peace, cooperation, and hope serves as a reminder that only through unity can the country achieve its full potential.
