The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has officially informed the Greater Accra Regional Police Command of its intent to stage a demonstration against the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).
This protest is over the recent cancellation and withholding of results for some students who took the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
The protest is scheduled for Tuesday, February 25, 2025, at 9:00 AM, commencing from Obra Spot in Circle, Accra.
According to NUGS, WAEC’s actions have negatively impacted thousands of students who were expecting to use their results to secure admission into tertiary institutions.
The Union described WAEC’s decision as unfair and detrimental to the future of these students, who have now been left in academic limbo.
The delay in releasing the results has meant that even those whose results were eventually made available could not apply for admission into public tertiary institutions, as the deadlines had already passed.
“NUGS strongly condemns WAEC’s actions, which have unfairly affected thousands of students. Even for those whose results have been released, the delay has rendered them ineligible for admission into public tertiary institutions, as all admission processes have now been concluded.
“Additionally, students whose results have been canceled are unable to register for remedial exams, as WAEC had already closed registration on January 7, 2025, before releasing the results.”

Accordingly, the student union emphasized that the planned demonstration is a direct response to what they consider a grave injustice and an overreach of discretionary power by WAEC.
They argued that the withholding and cancellation of results have unfairly disadvantaged thousands of students, many of whom have now missed out on crucial educational opportunities.
As a result, the union is calling on all affected students, concerned parents, education advocates, and relevant stakeholders to rally behind them in their demand for fairness, transparency, and accountability in the examination process.
Legal Action Against WAEC
In addition to the protest, NUGS has also announced its intention to take legal action against WAEC over the matter.
The union believes that WAEC’s decision to withhold and release results only after university admissions had closed constitutes an abuse of power.
NUGS President Daniel Korley Botchway expressed strong disapproval of WAEC’s approach and indicated that beyond the planned demonstration, the union would seek legal redress to prevent the recurrence of such incidents in the future.
“We seek to bring home the minds of Ghanaians to the abuse of power and discretionary authority by WAEC. What they have done is an injustice, and it should not happen again.”

He further disclosed that the union will pursue a court declaration to ensure that similar actions do not disadvantage students in subsequent years.
“Beyond this demonstration, it will not end there. We are also going to proceed to court. Admissions have closed. And so we are also going to get a declaration from the court to make sure that this doesn’t happen next year.”

The student body has vowed to continue advocating for students’ rights and ensuring that institutions such as WAEC are held accountable for their actions.
The upcoming demonstration is expected to draw significant attention, with students, parents, and concerned members of the public expected to participate.

Meanwhile, NUGS is also pushing for reforms within WAEC to ensure a more transparent and student-friendly examination process.
The union believes that WAEC’s consistent delays and abrupt decisions negatively impact students’ academic progress and overall trust in the education system.
To prevent such issues in the future, NUGS urged government intervention and oversight in WAEC’s operations.
They argue that mechanisms should be put in place to ensure that results are released in a timely manner, allowing students to meet academic deadlines without unnecessary obstacles.
As the protest date approaches, the student body remains resolute in its demand for justice. NUGS has reassured all affected students that it will not relent in its efforts to hold WAEC accountable and safeguard students’ academic futures.
