Director General of the National Lottery Authority of Ghana, Sammi Awuku, has advised the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to focus on regaining its majority advantage in Parliament.
The former National Organizer of the NPP said he antedates an encounter for several parliamentary seats in the 2024 elections. However, he added that the NPP will squash the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), via numerous tactics that will be arrayed by the NPP.
“I think that the NPP must focus on regaining our lost seats because there will be a battle for Parliament. But I think we [NPP] will beat the NDC through strategy.”

Moreover, Sammi Awuku hinted at the possibility of contesting for the Akropong parliamentary seat, on the ticket of the NPP. According to him, Opinion Leaders and more than a few Chiefs in the area, have persuaded him to compete for the Akropong seat.
Yet still, Sammi Awuku indicated that until the New Patriotic Party (NPP) opens nominations for party members to express their interest in contesting for parliamentary candidates in their various constituencies, he will continue to play a supportive role to the Member of Parliament for Akuapem North Constituency, Nana Ama Dokua Asiamah Adjei.
As such, he disclosed that he will not want to declare any form of interest in the seat to destabilize the current government, until the party opens nominations.
“When nominations are opened, I will consult my appointing authority among others, before I will declare my intentions. Before I go into elections, I do three things, I listen, I ask and check for myself if the grounds are fertile enough for me, before I go in for the contest. If the grounds are not conducive for me, I will not go in to waste my money.”
Sammi Awuku
On his chances in case he will contest, he indicated that elections are not a strait jacket and there is a lot of work to be done in order to lure in victory.
The NPP controlled 169 parliamentary seats after the 2016 polls, while the NDC had 106. However, after the 2020 polls, the NPP lost its strong grip on Parliament, reducing its seats to 137, while the NDC also had 137 seats and one independent candidate.
Sammi Awuku Considers Bawumia To Be A Good Future President
Regardless, Sammi Awuku still believes Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will make a good President.
He argues that Dr. Bawumia is a young man who looks into the future with courage and optimism, and that will make him a better flagbearer and subsequently President.
“I asked him two critical questions and he told me his major focus is to create a future of opportunities for young people. He is very tolerant and that politics of inclusion, is admirable. He also believes that with a coordinated effort, we can build a strong resilient country to make Ghana very formidable”.
Sammi Awuku
The former National Organizer of the NPP raised a point that the Vice President used 8 months of his life, to defend the party’s position in the Supreme Court; a feat which is worthy of praise. Through this, he believes that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is worthy of leading the NPP into victory.
“If Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia should declare his intentions to contest for the flagbearership, he should know that in the NPP, we compete for everything. He should know that it will not be a walk in the park, he is going to be grilled and people can make an industry out of propaganda that will be used against him.
Sammi Awuku
“He is contesting against very strong men but I think he is Primus Inter Pares. So, if the NPP opens nominations and he declares his intentions to contest I think he can give it a good shot and when he is confirmed by the NPP and the people of Ghana, I believe he will make a very good President.”
