Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has publicly apologised for what he describes as an “unfortunate act of indiscretion” that has triggered a flurry of reactions within Ghana’s political space.

In a statement, the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the state-owned Goldbod Company Limited, Sammy Gyamfi, admitted to an act that has drawn harsh criticism from sections of the public and some members of his own party, the NDC.

Sammy. Gyamfi emphasised that he believed the gesture was done privately and never expected it to be made public.

Folks, I have taken notice of the wave of criticisms against my person in the last 24 hours. To clarify, this was simply a kind gesture to a fellow human being, in line with my daily and lifelong custom of lending a helping hand to people in need.

“I sincerely thought that I was doing this act of kindness in private, and never imagined that same could find its way into the public space. That is unfortunate and regrettable”.

In an unusually humble tone, the NDC’s National Communications Officer acknowledged the dismay that his action had caused, particularly within his political circles.

“I must say that, I understand the uproar that this gesture has generated, particularly from comrades who are sincerely hurt by same. To all such comrades, I am sincerely sorry for this unfortunate act of indiscretion. I respect and appreciate your views.”

Though the specific nature of the act was not directly stated in the apology, public discourse in the last 24 hours has been awash with speculation and outrage over a gesture made by the prominent NDC figure, prompting some to demand accountability, including calls for punitive action from President John Dramani Mahama.

For some, Sammy Gyamfi’s actions are seen as inconsistent with the public officers’ code of conduct and ethics and potentially damaging to the National Democratic Congress’s administration.

Critics have described the incident as an avoidable misstep that could compromise the integrity of the NDC’s communications machinery and cast a shadow over the new administration’s broader message of accountability, probity, and social justice.

Several voices within the opposition New Patriotic Party have called on President Mahama to take disciplinary action against Sammy Gyamfi, either through suspension or removal from his roles at Goldbod.

These critics argue that while acts of kindness are admirable, public officers must be mindful of perception, especially in a polarized political climate where any misstep can be weaponized by political opponents.

However, others have risen to Sammy Gyamfi’s defense, urging the public and party members alike to exercise compassion.

These sympathisers argue that his act, though miscalculated in terms of public perception, was not rooted in malice or corruption, and that his swift apology should be enough to quell the backlash.

In the latter part of his statement, Sammy  Gyamfi expressed gratitude to those who have offered him counsel and support during what appears to be a difficult moment for him.

Reaffirming his commitment to public service, Sammy Gyamfi reiterated that his outlook on leadership remains unchanged.

“Let me state, however, that my view of public office as a privilege to serve society, solve problems and help others has not changed. I remain focused on the task entrusted to me by His Excellency, the President, for the development of our country.”

While he did not directly address calls for his resignation or suspension, Sammy Gyamfi’s tone suggested a man keenly aware of the political cost of his actions.

By apologising publicly and reaffirming his values, the seasoned communicator may be seeking to draw a line under the incident, hoping that the party hierarchy and the general public will move on.

He ended his statement on a lighter note, wishing Ghanaians a blissful Sunday and extending heartfelt greetings to mothers.
