The appointment of Lawyer Sammy Gyamfi as the Acting Managing Director of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC) has been met with widespread commendation from various stakeholders, including the National Concerned Small-Scale Miners Association of Ghana and the Eastern Region Communications Bureau of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

In a press statement issued on January 17, 2025, the National Concerned Small-Scale Miners Association described Mr. Gyamfi’s appointment as a “significant milestone” with the potential to usher in positive developments in Ghana’s mining industry.

The association recalled its engagements with the NDC during the 2024 general elections, highlighting the party’s campaign manifesto, which aligned with the interests of small-scale miners.

“With Mr. Gyamfi’s appointment as Acting MD of PMMC, we are confident that he will collaborate effectively with stakeholders to promote the collective interests of the small-scale mining sector.”

The group further emphasized the need for Mr. Gyamfi to prioritize sustainable mining practices, ensure transparency, and foster collaboration to improve the sector’s overall performance.

Technocratic Leadership for a Critical Sector

While celebrating Mr. Gyamfi’s new role, the National Concerned Small-Scale Miners Association also urged President John Dramani Mahama to appoint a technocrat with extensive expertise as Minister for Lands and Natural Resources.

The association argued that addressing critical issues such as water pollution and environmental degradation requires leaders with both technical knowledge and practical experience.

“We strongly believe that appointing experts to oversee this critical sector will ensure sustainable development, safeguard the environment, and bolster the nation’s economic growth.”

As Mr. Gyamfi assumes leadership at PMMC, expectations are high for a new phase of growth, transparency, and efficiency in the management of Ghana’s precious minerals sector. The association pledged its support for his administration and called for a united effort to address longstanding challenges in the mining industry.

Eastern Region NDC Applauds Appointment

In another statement, the Eastern Region Communications Bureau of the NDC also lauded Sammy Gyamfi’s appointment, describing it as a testament to his “unwavering dedication, exceptional leadership, and commitment to national service.”

In a statement signed by Kojo Danquah, Eastern Regional Communications Officer of the NDC, the bureau celebrated Mr. Gyamfi’s accomplishments as National Communications Officer of the NDC, where he has been a “pillar of truth, strategy, and resilience.”

The bureau expressed confidence in Mr. Gyamfi’s ability to bring transformative leadership, integrity, and vision to PMMC, adding, “We have no doubt that under your stewardship, PMMC will thrive, ushering in a new era of excellence, transparency, and economic growth.”
