The Tertiary Education Institutions Network (TEIN) at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) has issued a strong statement criticizing the Vice President, Dr Alhaji Mahamadu Bawumia ahead of his scheduled speech at the university on February 7th.

The statement calls out the Vice President, who is set to officially launch his bid for the presidency, demanding answers to pressing economic questions and highlighting perceived unfulfilled promises by the New Patriotic Party administration.

The statement, signed by the association, President Parku Selacy Stephen, expressed the anticipation of the Ghanaian youth for the Vice President to address the promises, he made during his campaign while in opposition.

The Tertiary Education Institutions Network (TEIN) at the University of Professional Studies expressing concerns about the change of venue from Central University to UPSA for the Vice President’s speech touted the modern infrastructure at the university and indicated that such progress was as a result of dedicated leadership by the University leadership.

The association while demanding transparency on the reasons for the change in the venue of the Vice President’s speech chastised the vice President to release the marking scheme for the 170 questions he posed to Former late Vice President, Dr  Paa Kwesi Amissah Arthur Bekoe.

The association drawing parallels to the academic setting, where after semester exams, answer schemes are provided to students for transparency and understanding of their expectations, strongly insisted on the need for the Vice President to produce the answers to the questions he posed to the then Vice President, Dr  Paa Kwesi Amissah Arthur Bekoe.

“The French proverb ‘something promised, something owed’ clearly expresses moral expectations about promises made by duty bearers. The promises made during the campaign become a social contract between citizens and the government. A breach of this promise calls for sanctions against duty bearers. It is noteworthy that Ghana’s Vice President, Alhaji Mahamadu Bawumia, has chosen to address Ghanaians after being elected as the Flagbearer of the NPP.

“Surprisingly, he is not doing this at the Central University but at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA). As we are not privy to the reasons for the change of venue from Central University to UPSA, the people of Ghana, especially the youth, are eagerly anticipating the release of the marking scheme for the 170 questions he believed an answer to that would have unlocked our economic fortunes”.

Furthermore, the Tertiary Education Institutions Network (TEIN) at the University of Professional Studies listed a series of questions that they expect the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to address during his speech, covering topics such as the depreciation of the Ghanaian currency, increased national debt, introduction of new taxes, and rising unemployment rates in the country.

The Association further called on the New Patriotic Party flagbearer to provide reasons for the introduction of the controversial E-Levy on mobile money transactions, inflation rates, and escalating prices of essential goods like gari among others.

Moreover, the Tertiary Education Institutions Network (TEIN) at the University of Professional Studies questioned the efficiency in the utilization of public funds by the New Patriotic Party administration and challenged the Vice President, Dr Mahamaudu Bawumia to explain the government’s spending decisions over the past seven years and the allocation of over GHC800 billion in revenue.

The Tertiary Education Institutions Network (TEIN) at the University of Professional Studies concluded its statement by stressing that the upcoming 2024 elections will assess candidates based on credibility, competence, and trust.

The association urged the Vice President and the New Patriotic Party flagbearer to address the economic challenges the country is currently facing under his leadership as the Head of the Economic Management Team.
