The Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, Hon. Michael Okyere Baafi, has stated that this is not the right time to put the blame on anyone concerning the current state of the economy of Ghana.
According to him, this is not the time for diabolic analysis that will throw certain things into the system and create impressions that are not true. He indicated that the country encountered issues like Covid, but government was able to meander its way out of these issues.
The Deputy Minister said that the deteriorating economic situation of the country’s affairs should not be limited to Ghana only, because it is an issue faced by people all over the world.
“Let us not restrict our conversation to only Ghana. This situation is a global phenomenon and countries are suffering, major and big economies with big GDPs are going through hell and they are rationing power. Things are happening in bigger jurisdictions and it is not only in Ghana.”
Hon. Michael Okyere Baafi
According to him, people in the country may not be able to see what goes on in other countries but the government has accepted that the country is facing issues. He also stated that everyone must come together, whether they are in power or not, and work together to fight the crisis.
This is not the first time the country is facing such crisis, he said, adding that the previous times the country went through similar situation, the government worked hard to put things in order.
“So, my point is very simple, there’s a situation. How best can we come together to fight the situation to get back?”
Hon. Michael Okyere Baafi
He emphasized that certain things are not needed at this time, and the kind of analysis made by some people are backed by mischief because such individuals were doing it just to paint the system black.
Government Is Not Listening To Proposed Solutions
Hon. George Ricketts-Hagan, MP for Cape Coast South Constituency and a Member of the Privileges Committee of parliament, noted that the government is not listening to the solutions given by the minority and other people.
He said that the people in government are talking to themselves and hearing themselves only, adding that the government is thinking too hard about the problem, hence they cannot see the simple solutions that are before them.
“They can’t even see that there are simple things that they need to do. Like you talked about low hanging fruits, you pick those before you actually climb the tree. They are climbing the trees, going past the hanging fruits, thinking that they are going to get to the peak and pick the ones up there.”
Hon. George Ricketts-Hagan
The government does not understand the situation that the country finds itself in, and this is its problem, he declared.
“As I said earlier, we had a problem and the problem snowballed. You give them solutions, and advise them, they don’t listen and it’s getting bigger… At the moment, if you really see what is happening; you understand it, you feel it, this situation is no longer a problem, it’s an emergency.”
Hon. George Ricketts-Hagan
He urged the government to listen to Ghanaians because the finance minister does not listen to anyone, therefore he has failed abysmally as a public finance manager.
