As the election season approaches, political parties face a crucial test of unity as party unity is the backbone of a successful electoral campaign, and its absence can spell disaster.
A united party presents a strong, cohesive message to voters, boosting confidence and trust. In contrast, disunity creates confusion, undermines voter trust, and diverts resources to internal conflicts.
Furthermore, party unity maximizes a party’s electoral performance by choosing a formidable team for election, enhancing campaign efficiency, motivating party members, strengthening voter trust, and amplifying electoral performance.
This unity of purpose and message enables the party to speak with one voice, appealing to a broader audience and increasing its chances of success.
The Majority Leader in Parliament, Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has cautioned his New Patriotic Party (NPP) colleagues and supporters against engaging in internal conflicts and personal attacks ahead of the party’s highly anticipated running mate announcement, urging them to maintain unity and focus on their shared goals.
Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin emphasized that with the 2024 elections looming and the selection of a running mate for NPP’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, still pending, the party’s unity is more crucial than ever, and infighting over the yet-to-be-made decision would be counterproductive.
Afenyo-Markin urged NPP lawmakers to exercise discretion and diplomatic language in their public statements and comments regarding the running mate selection, cautioning them to prioritize party unity and avoid inflammatory rhetoric that could spark unnecessary divisions and tensions.
“Yes, we’ve all heard matters regarding running mate to complement our ticket but no decision has been made yet and the party structures are there. So I would want to encourage colleague MPs that we are in this together. There is no perfect person in this world”.
Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin
He cautioned that a perceived lack of unity and cohesion within the party’s ranks could have a detrimental impact on their electoral fortunes, potentially eroding voter confidence and jeopardizing their chances of success in the upcoming elections.
NPP Warned: Disunity Spells Doom
Furthermore, disunity can have devastating consequences as it leads to infighting, factionalism, and power struggles creating confusion among voters, and undermining trust and confidence in the party.

Disunity also diverts resources, attention, and energy to internal conflicts, weakening the party’s electoral performance.
Internal party disunity results in defections, resignations –like the issue of Alan Kyerematen after the NPP’s presidential primaries–, and public criticism which further damages the party’s reputation, making it harder to attract voters.
Moreover, disunity can lead to electoral defeat, damaging the party’s credibility and making it harder to regain voter trust in the future.
Disunity also undermines the party’s ability to govern effectively, as internal conflicts and power struggles can continue even after the election.
As such, Hon. Afenyo-Markin cautioned against internal squabbles, petty squabbles, and personal attacks within the party, warning that such divisive behavior could further tarnish the NPP’s image in the eyes of the electorate, ultimately harming their electoral prospects and undermining their chances of success.
“None of us can tick every box, so let’s be careful how we describe each other, how we say things about our colleagues, how we approach things, and the language we use. It may not be helpful. So that is all my advice. Be measured in the language we use”.
Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin
The Majority Leader reassured his colleagues that Dr. Bawumia, in close consultation with senior party leaders and stakeholders, would make a thoughtful and strategic decision regarding the running mate selection, one that would ultimately benefit the party’s collective interests and advance their shared goals.
To steer clear of these potential pitfalls, the NPP must prioritize unity, discipline, and accountability by implementing a transparent and inclusive decision-making process, fostering open communication and constructive feedback, and promoting a culture of collaboration and mutual respect, thereby ensuring a cohesive and strong party stance ahead of the elections.
