As Ghana approaches the pivotal 2024 general elections, the stakes couldn’t be higher for the nation’s democracy. Amidst the backdrop of rapid technological advancements and an explosion in internet connectivity, misinformation, and disinformation have emerged as formidable threats to the peace and stability of the nation.

In this critical juncture, the Minister of National Security, Hon. Albert Kan-Dapaah, and the organizers of The Ghana Report Summit have issued a clarion call to action, urging Ghanaians to play their part in safeguarding the nation’s democracy.

“Freedom of speech is a cherished right, but it must come with a responsibility. It must be the responsibility not to spread falsehoods,” Hon. Kan-Dapaah stated.

Hon. Kan-Dapaah’s remarks are timely, given the increasing prevalence of misinformation and disinformation, especially on social media platforms, which poses a threat to the nation’s stability.

These malicious narratives can incite violence, undermine confidence in institutions, and erode the social cohesion necessary for a functioning democracy. As the nation gears up for the 2024 elections, the potential for these threats to escalate is real and palpable.

“Media outlets at all times must uphold the highest ethical standards of journalism, emphasizing fact-checking, balanced reporting, and objective analysis, devoid, totally devoid of agenda that will destabilize our nation.”

Hon. Albert Kan-Dapaah, Minister of National Security

The importance of accurate information is paramount, particularly during election periods. Hon. Kan-Dapaah highlighted the potential dangers of misinformation and disinformation, which can lead to unrest and undermine the democratic process.

Hon. Kan-Dapaah further called on the media to play a critical role in educating and informing the public responsibly, ensuring that election results are announced accurately to maintain peace and order.

Rashida Saani, the Chief Executive of The Ghana Report, echoed the sentiments expressed by Hon. Kan-Dapaah, calling for collective efforts to protect free speech while ensuring the quality and integrity of shared information.

Rashida Saani urged the public to reaffirm their commitment to the principles underpinning the nation’s democracy, especially in the face of rapid technological advancements that have exacerbated the spread of misinformation.

Amid the rapid growth of internet connectivity and technological advancements, the summit identified unforeseen loopholes that have become fertile grounds for misinformation and disinformation.

Rashida Saani called on the public to work together to protect free speech while ensuring the quality and integrity of the information shared.

“As we approach the December elections, it is imperative that citizens have access to reliable information to make informed decisions.”

To combat the menace of misinformation and disinformation, Saani outlined several initiatives, including establishing a dedicated fact-checking team within The Ghana Report, conducting nationwide training workshops for journalists, and partnering with technology companies.

These efforts aim to equip information gatekeepers with the tools and knowledge needed to identify, combat, and prevent the spread of misleading content.

The inaugural edition of The Ghana Report Summit, organized by The Ghana Report—a subsidiary of I-ZAR Group and the 2019 Best News Portal of the Year/Best Portal in Corporate Social Responsibilities at the 25th Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Awards—served as a beacon of hope amidst the challenges posed by misinformation and disinformation.

The summit aimed to unravel the tactics employed by purveyors of fake news, expose the dangers they pose, and recommend best practices for responsible information dissemination.

As Ghana stands on the precipice of another defining moment in its democratic journey, the call to action by Hon. Albert Kan-Dapaah and the organizers of The Ghana Report Summit serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility each citizen bears in safeguarding the nation’s peace and democracy.

By embracing the principles of truth, accountability, and responsible citizenship, Ghanaians can navigate the challenges posed by misinformation and disinformation, ensuring that the nation’s democratic processes remain robust, credible, and resilient.
