A man has tragically drowned as he tried to copy the iconic flying pose in the ‘Titanic’ movie with his girlfriend.
Furkan Ciftci, and his girlfriend, Mine Dinar, both aged 23, tumbled over into the sea in, Izmit, Turkey, after trying to create the iconic Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet pose. The couple, who had been drinking alcohol on a fishing trip, chose the edge of a pier for the perfect picture but tragedy struck when both of them fell into the sea, according to reports.
Furkan and Mine reportedly crossed a security chain to pose on the edge of the pier, with the pair falling into the water soon after they attempted recreating the iconic scene from the James Cameron-directed feature. As the couple were about to copy the ‘King of the World’ pose from the Oscar-winning feature film, their imitation went tragically wrong, with Ciftci drowning when the pair fell off the pier.
Fishermen came to the rescue
The incident prompted local fishermen to rush to the couple’s aid as the pair fell into the sea, with one fisherman rescuing Mine after she grabbed onto the end of a fishing rod. She was pulled to safety, but her boyfriend, Ciftci, sadly disappeared under the waves. It was there that the emergency services were called to the scene to search for the 23-year-old. Ciftci’s body was later pulled out of the ocean by a diving team two hours after the ordeal, as Mine was taken to hospital by ambulance.
Mine told police she and her partner thought it would have been funny to recreate the ‘Titanic pose’.
“We drank alcohol and then wanted to have a Titanic pose. We lost balance and fell into the sea,” Dinar said in her first testimony given at the hospital.
According to Mine’s relatives, doctors gave sedatives to her “to keep her calm,” as she lost her boyfriend.
The couple’s final moments together were captured on CCTV as they were seen setting up chairs on the pier ready to fish.
Meanwhile, investigations into the incident are ongoing, with Ciftci’s body set to undergo an autopsy before his funeral takes place.
‘Titanic’ is a passion project for filmmaker, James Cameron. The movie was a fictional retelling of one of the most famous maritime tragedies of all time. ‘Titanic’ gave a personal bend to the tragedy through its fictional leads, Jack and Rose, played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet in their stardom-defining roles, with an excellent supporting cast of actors at the top of their game.
‘Titanic’ rewrote the rules of what it meant to be a successful film, becoming the highest-grossing feature of all time and holding on to that record for more than a decade before being ousted by another Cameron movie, ‘Avatar’. It is worth mentioning that ‘Titanic’ also picked up 11 Academy Awards and it still remains an evergreen favorite movie for several people.
