Head Coach of the Black Stars, Otto Addo, has finally announced his ultimate squad for the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup which kicks off on Sunday, November 20, 2022.

Only two players from Ghana’s final list have played at the previous editions of the World Cup – Andre Ayew (2010 and 2014) and Jordan Ayew (2014).

The squad also has two players who made themselves available for selection at the end of the 2021/22 season. The two are Inaki Williams and Mohammed Salisu. There is also a place for Abdul Salis Samed who has been in good run of form for RC Lens.

The Bet Power Premier League will be well represented in Qatar as two former U-20 AFCON winners, Danlad Ibrahim of Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Daniel Afriyie Barnieh of Accra Hearts were included in the 26-man squad.

Danlad Ibrahim is one of the three goalkeepers included in the squad and he is expected to fight for the first spot which will be keenly contested by Manaf Nurudeen and Lawrence Ati-Zigi.

Black Stars number one goalkeeper, Jojo Wollacott, will sadly miss the 2022 FIFA World Cup after suffering a finger injury over the weekend. The team was also dented another blow when Orlando Pirates and Black Star goal keeper, Richard Ofori, was ruled out due to injury.

The announcement of the 26-man squad for the FIFA showpiece came as a relieve for most soccer fans in the country who were growing impatient to know which players will get the nod from an earlier 55-man provisional squad released by the technical team.

Notable exclusions

There are however, concerns over the exclusion of youngster, Felix Afena-Gyan, who played a key role in the final qualifying matches for the World Cup. Joseph Paintsil who plays as a midfielder for Belgian club, Genk, was also excluded from the squad despite making some impressive contributions to his club this season. Jeffrey Schlupp who plays as a forward or winger or occasional left back for Premier League club, Crystal Palace also missed out.

Ghana is among few countries to announce its squad in barely 6 days to the opening game of the much-anticipated tournament. Top nations including Senegal, Denmark, Japan, France, England, Belgium, and Brazil have already announced their lists.

The team is expected to play its final friendly match against World Cup-bound Switzerland on November 17, 2022 which is expected to serve as the team’s final trial ahead of the tournament.

The team will then head to Qatar to face Portugal, Uruguay and South Korea in Group H of the 2022 World Cup.

Ghana is making its fourth appearance at the World Cup having featured in the 2006, 2010, and 2014 editions before missing out in the 2018 edition.
