Liverpool moved level on points with Tottenham at the top of the Premier League as they put on a show at Anfield for their returning supporters with a 4-0 victory over Wolves.
The lucky fans in the ground were seeing the champions play in the flesh for the first time since their Premier League title win in June, and they weren’t disappointed.
Mohamed Salah pounced on Conor Coady’s error to open the scoring in the first half before goals from Georginio Wijnaldum, Joel Matip and a Nelson Semedo own goal sealed the emphatic victory and extended their unbeaten league home record to 65 games.
The three points see Liverpool, move back up to second in the table whiles Wolves stay 10th after suffering a fourth league defeat of the season.

The 2,000 Chelsea fans in the stands were almost immediately silenced by their former striker Patrick Bamford and his impressive opener just four minutes in.
Olivier Giroud, making his first Premier League start of the season pulled the Blues level on 27 minutes, though, turning home Reece James’ brilliant cross, before Kurt Zouma’s header completed the turnaround.
Leeds pushed for a late equaliser but Timo Werner broke away down the right and teed up Christian Pulisic to tuck in the third sparking wild celebrations in the stands and in the Chelsea dugout.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer rung the changes at the break and his substitutes transformed the game, with Bruno Fernandes setting up Paul Pogba’s superb equaliser before the Portuguese had a hand in Mason Greenwood’s clinical strike.
Having turned the game on its head, Marcus Rashford then sealed the victory, lifting the ball over Lukasz Fabianski after fellow substitute Juan Mata played him through on goal.
The victory extends Manchester United’s club-record away winning run to nine games leaving them fifth on the table.

Leicester’s performance tailed off in the second period but they could have had the game wrapped up as both Vardy and James Maddison hit the post in the first half.
The Blades were minutes away from their second point of the season but Vardy raced clear from a Maddison pass with one of the last attacks of the game and grabbed maximum points for the Foxes.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored his 11th league goal of the season as Everton drew 1-1 at Burnley in the first Premier League draw between the two sides.
Burnley took the lead inside three minutes through Robbie Brady’s superb low strike for his first goal since December 2019.
Everton improved after switching to Carlo Ancelotti’s preferred 4-3-3 formation following an injury to Fabian Delph, and they were rewarded as Richarlison and Calvert-Lewin linked up, with the latter poking home a cross for his 16th goal for club and country in all competitions this season.
Both sides lacked a cutting edge in the second period but had their chances to win it. James Rodriguez forced a flying save from Nick Pope early in the half before Chris Wood did the same against Jordan Pickford as the game drew to a close.
Wilfried Zaha and Christian Benteke marked their respective returns to the Crystal Palace XI with doubles in a 5-1 hammering of West Brom, who controversially had Matheus Pereira sent off.
The tone of the game was set inside eight minutes when Darnell Furlong turned a Zaha cross into the back of his own net to hand Palace the lead. But West Brom rallied and Conor Gallagher scored his second Premier League goal when he coolly swept home on the 30-minute mark.
There was VAR controversy soon after as Pereira was sent off for violent conduct. It proved to be the decisive moment in the game as the floodgates opened after the break. Zaha and Benteke both scored a brace as Palace scored five goals away from home for the first time in the top division.
It was another afternoon to forget for West Brom, who moved down to 19th on goal difference, while Crystal Palace are now in 11th with 16 points.
