Gaza’s Wheel Of Life Brought To A Steady Halt

In a statement highlighting the needs in the besieged enclave, the Government Media Office in Gaza said, among other things that the wheel of life has stopped in Gaza.

It noted that the truce revealed the massive extent of destruction, especially in Gaza City and the northern Gaza Strip, adding that the Gaza Strip needs 1,000 aid trucks daily to recover.

The office also mentioned the need for hundreds of fuel trucks as well as civil defence equipment, machines and medical devices.

US Proposal For Temporary Gaza Ceasefire Fails To Hit Hamas’ Mark

“The health sector is completely collapsed,” it said.

UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres noted that Palestinians were enduring “one of the darkest chapters” of their history.

In a statement ahead of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, Guterres echoed his call for a long-term ceasefire and the release of all hostages held by Hamas.

While condemning the October 7 attack, Guterres said that it “cannot justify the collective punishment of the Palestinian people.”

He also called for “unrestricted access for lifesaving aid, the release of all hostages, the protection of civilians and an end to violations of international humanitarian law.”

Though Israel and Hamas have agreed to extend a temporary cease-fire through to Wednesday, Israel has vowed to resume the war and return to its goal of destroying Hamas.

World Health Organization (WHO) spokesperson, Margaret Harris also stated that there is a risk that more people could die from diseases than from bombings in Gaza if the enclave’s health system is not put back on its feet quickly.

She described the collapse of Al-Shifa hospital in northern Gaza as a “tragedy” and voiced concern about the detention of some of its medical staff by Israeli forces.

Later, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), announced that several tonnes of aid have managed to reach northern Gaza, which has borne the brunt of Israel’s military assault.

The supplies include ready-to-eat meals, drinking water, tents and blankets, as well as medicines.

Fuel for electricity production and supplies for the operations of desalination and sewage treatment plants, as well as water pumping stations, had also been delivered.

OCHA added that drinking water was being supplied to people in the south via two pipes from Israel.

Dixmude Docks In Egypt

French President Emmanuel Macron (L) stands at attention on the deck of Dixmude in the French Navy base of Toulon on November 9, 2022.

Also on Tuesday, French Defence Minister, Sebastien Lecornu disclosed that French helicopter carrier, Dixmude has docked in Egypt and could start treating wounded children from Gaza later this week.

Dixmude is the first Western military ship to dock in Egypt since the conflict started. It moored at El Arish, some 50km (31 miles) west of Gaza.

“We have this ship, which has been transformed into a hospital and which arrived yesterday. It has 40 beds,” Lecornu told a French radio station.

With two operating theatres, the warship can treat those with light injuries before moving to hospitals on the ground.

French officials said about 22 civilian doctors, including 16 surgeons and six paediatricians, are on board the ship.

Paris has also made 50 beds available in France for seriously wounded and sick children in Gaza, which could include cancer patients.

French Foreign Minister, Catherine Colonna said earlier that three young French nationals were among the captives released by Hamas on Monday and added that they were in good health.

“We have indirect news, and that news is good … It is a great, great relief,” Colonna told a radio station.

“Three French children were finally freed; now we must work relentlessly for the release of all the other hostages,” she said, adding that five French nationals were still missing or believed to be held captive.
