Vance Signals US Indifference To India-Pakistan Conflict

US Vice President, JD Vance.

US Vice President, JD Vance has said that the US will not intervene in the conflict between Pakistan and India.

Speaking in an interview, the US Vice President said that the US would try to encourage India and Pakistan to “de-escalate a little bit.”

“But we’re not going to get involved in the middle of war that’s fundamentally none of our business and has nothing to do with America’s ability to control it.”

JD Vance

He added that as the US could force neither side to lay down their arms, the country would “continue to pursue this thing through diplomatic channels.”

“Our hope and our expectation is that this is not going to spiral into a broader regional war or, God forbid, a nuclear conflict. Right now, we don’t think that’s going to happen.”

JD Vance

The remarks match Donald Trump’s “America first” foreign policy of calling for a retreat from the US role as a mediator in foreign conflicts.

Trump and Vance have both warned that the United States is willing to walk away from an attempt to broker a ceasefire in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine if the two sides cannot be led to hold direct talks.

Vance, who has played a significant role in foreign policy in the new Trump administration, traveled to India last month, where he said that India could retaliate against “terrorists” in Pakistan but said the US did not want that to spiral into a broader regional conflict.

In an editorial published on Friday, May 9, 2025, a Pakistani newspaper called on both Islamabad and New Delhi “to step back from the brink” as threats of a wider conflict increase.

The editorial came after the declaration from US Vice President, JD Vance that the brewing conflict is “none of our business.”

The publication also noted the “indifference” on the part of the international community “to actively help defuse the crisis.” It stressed, “This indifference is perplexing in a nuclear neighbourhood, as an escalation in hostilities will not remain a bilateral matter, but affect all of South Asia as well as the Middle East.”

The publication added that the actual reality of conflict is much darker. It asserted that what a nuclear showdown has in store is too horrific to contemplate. “Therefore, sense must prevail, and the march to war should be halted,” it urged.

Meanwhile, the rivals have repeatedly accused each other of launching attacks since their conflict escalated Wednesday.

The Indian army claimed that Pakistan’s armed forces launched multiple attacks using drones and other weapons along India’s western border on Thursday night and Friday morning.

The army said Pakistan also “resorted to numerous ceasefire violations” along the Line of Control (LoC) between Indian- and Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

The military said in a post on X that the drone attacks were “effectively repulsed,” adding that it gave a “befitting reply”, without providing details.

Pakistan’s Information Minister, Attaullah Tarar again denied that Pakistan launched attacks on targets in Indian-administered Kashmir on Thursday, calling claims of attacks “baseless” as he questioned footage published by Indian media.

Pakistan has denied carrying out any cross-border attacks over recent days.

Explosions were heard Jammu city, in Indian-administered Kashmir on Thursday, an Indian Army spokesperson told a news agency, adding there was a blackout in the region.

Journalists and residents also spoke about “panic” and “palpable tension” in the city.

Heavy shelling was reported in Uri, in Indian-administered Kashmir, according to a local police officer.

There have been widespread reports of people fleeing their homes as gunfire and shelling continues, while others seek safety in bunkers under their homes.
