Ghanaian counselor turned rape apologist, George Lutterodt has made a shocking claim about rape victims.
The self-professed ‘counsellor’ George Lutterodt made the infamous statement on a television show yesterday. Leaving many wondering if he drank a keg of apeteshie (a local Ghanaian gin) before coming on the show.
He further went into prognosis on how rape victims feign discomfort after few minutes of forced intercourse. He had the effrontery to boldly make the masochistic bluff on live television by saying
“Every rape victim enjoys it.”
The issue of domestic violence was prevalent during the lock-down to contain the outbreak of the virus. This left women in quite alarming numbers also dealing with abusive partners and adolescents being abused by family members and miscreants in the community ‘cheek in jowl’ with the pandemic.
Such irresponsible communique on live television should be curbed with a fine on comments that glorifies rape culture.
Ghanaian TV presenter Ama K Abebrese has berated the rape apologist on her Instagram page for being insensitive and callous with his claims on national television.
Rape pandemic in Ghana
Currently, in Ghana, victims of rape, sexual assault, and defilement have to pay between 300-800 GHS ($45 – $160) depending on the exchange rate) to undergo a medical examination and get a report for police to do necessary investigates. In Ghana, the average reported monthly salary in the informal sector is 150 GHS (between $25 – $30).
Sign the petition to Abolish Medical Examination Fees For All Victims of Rape And Sexual Assault in Ghana.
In light of this, a disproportionate number of victims in Ghana and their families are unable to seek criminal justice due to financial constraints. The medical examination for rape and sexual assault should be free for all victims.
