The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has revealed that, the subject results of some 2,383 candidates who sat for this year’s West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) have been cancelled.

The released provisional results of candidates who sat for the examination, among other things, were accused of engaging in collusion and bringing foreign materials to the examination hall and tearing part of their question papers to solicit assistance.

According to the examination body, “this follows the completion of all post-examination processes.”

“The entire results of 480 candidates have been cancelled for bringing mobile phones to the examination hall.

“The entire results of 384 candidates have been withheld pending the conclusion of investigation into various cases of examination malpractices detected during and after the conduct of the examination”.

The examination body further stated that, withheld results may be cancelled or released based on the outcome of the investigations.

They further advised candidates to be wary of fake results websites and the activities of fraudsters who promise to upgrade results for a fee.

“Candidates are to note that all WAEC results are secured and can be authenticated. Institutions are therefore urged to always verify results presented to them to expose incidents of forgery,” the Council added.

Statistic based on release from WAEC revealed that a total of 375,763 final year students from 976 schools sat for the examination. With this, the figures indicated this is 8.6 percent higher than that of 2019 which saw just 346, 098 candidates.

“The 2020 entry figure was made up of 187, 581 (49.9%) males and 188, 182 (50.1%) females. A total of 3, 343 (0.89%) of the candidates who registered were absent from the examination”.

The Council noted that it has also hosted the results online for candidates who so desire to access their results on the Council’s website – www.waecgh.org.

Examination results, according to the Council will be dispatched to the various senior high schools, therefore “candidates are advised to contact their heads of school for their results“.

“In the meantime, scripts of candidates from 122 schools in certain subjects are undergoing scrutiny”.

The Council conclusively expressed gratitude to all and sundry especially stakeholders in their involvement in ensuring a seamless examination process.

“Council is especially appreciative to the Ministry of Education, Ghana Education Service, the Security Agencies, Supervisors, Invigilators, Ministry of health offices and examiners for their support and cooperation before, during and after the conduct of the examination amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.”

The West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) scheduled for May/June this year was suspended over the coronavirus outbreak.

The West African Examination Council (WAEC) disclosed that, it took the decision in support of measures put in place by member countries to prevent the spread of the pandemic.

According to the Council, the decision was based on a reschedule proposal from the WAEC Secretariat which was approved by the Chairman of the Council.

In a nationwide address on Sunday, March 15, 2020, President Akufo-Addo suspended all educational activities in the country with the exception of students who will be taking part in this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

They were allowed to attend school to prepare for their examinations.

The decision raised concerns from parents and teacher unions who asked government to include the final year students and their teachers in order to avoid massive spread of the virus.
