Nigerian singer and songwriter, Chike Osebuka, has revealed that he has no plans to get married at the moment, describing marriage as a “stupid step.”

The 32-year-old artist, known for his soulful and love-themed songs, made the remark during an interview. “In my personal opinion, in fact, I think it’s a stupid step to get married, that’s my opinion,” he said.

Chike, popular for his romantic ballads, also revealed that his happiness is tied to financial stability.

“For me to be happy, to be honest, I need a lot of money. This is not even a canal. I won’t lie to you, I like money. I want money.”

Reflecting on his career journey, he said he never envisioned making a living from music until after his university education.

“I would say maybe right after my university, I knew music was what I would do for a living. I won’t say I knew before, to be honest, because I just used to sing and disturb everybody around me.”

Meanwhile, the singer recounted moments of financial struggle in his early career, when he had to take acting jobs to make ends meet. “It was a tough part, I even had to start acting for like two years,” he said.

On finding success, Chike disclosed that his mother once asked him if he had joined a cult.

He also shared his disappointment with some friends who failed to support him when he needed funds to stage a show.

“I remember one time when I was about to do my show, and how much does the entire show cost? I think N400,000, if not less. because a lot of things were favours. And I called the friends I used to hang out with and drink with, and I mean, not, I’m not a drinker, but people I have fun with, and I knew the answer was no. But I just thought that I deserved the respect of telling me that, oh, you don’t have it, or you can’t do it now, or, oh man, I just, I flat out don’t have it.

“And with some of them, they just stopped picking up my calls, you know, they just stopped. And it was, you know, a female friend of mine, still that I went to, and for the first time, you know. At least I was comfortable around her enough to let out a couple of emotions, and I remember I actually cried that day.”

According to him, the female friend looked at him, saying, “Chike, don’t worry, I’ll give you the money, just go and concentrate. And that was, that’s how I got the money, literally gave me the money.”

Chike began his music career in 2015 following his participation in Project Fame.

He was the first runner-up on The Voice of Nigeria in 2016 and went on to release Fancy, his debut single, later that same year.

Chike’s opinion on marriage divided netizens.

@mzmeemee1: “Haaaa! And you Dey sing love songs up and down. They use your songs for most weddings. Abeg, you need to explain what you just said.”

@comr_talented: “Very stupid step, when someone tells me he’s getting married, I ask why.”

@kemx_cosmetics: “It’s no big deal if he doesn’t want to get married or even have children, not everyone wants to..”

@cortierepr0: “Chike has mastered the art of charm, everything from his smooth vocals to his effortless style positions him as the ultimate ladies’ man. If this is part of the plan, his management deserves serious credit, because the brand is as irresistible as the music.”
