EPL Review: Manchester United hit Leeds for six

Manchester United have moved up to the third position in the Premier League with a frantic 6-2 victory over Leeds.

The goals duly flooded in as Scott McTominay got the hosts started with barely a minute on the clock with a low, long-range effort, and the midfielder got his second within three minutes with a neat finish inside the box.

Leeds’s defence collapsed as Bruno Fernandes lashed Manchester United three ahead through a narrow gap from 12 yards, and the visitors conceded four goals for the fourth time already this season as Victor Lindelof converted at the far post after Anthony Martial flicked on a corner

Leeds pulled one back through Liam Cooper’s header from their own corner, with five goals and 18 shots recorded in the first half.

After the break, Manchester United regained their four-goal lead as Daniel James shot through the legs of Illan Meslier following a counter-attack.

Fernandes’ penalty made it 6-1 after Pascal Struijk fouled Martial, and the chaos continued as Stuart Dallas curled a beauty into the top right corner for 6-2, sandwiched in-between several guilt-edged chances at both ends.

Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah both scored twice as Liverpool annihilated Crystal Palace with a 7-0 victory at Selhurst Park.

The tone was set inside three minutes when Takumi Minamino scored his first Premier League goal, slotting home after some good work from Sadio Mane. The Senegal international then doubled Liverpool’s lead later in the half after Palace’s best spell of the game, netting with a crisp finish.

Firmino  added a third just before half time after a lightning counter-attack, before Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson curled a wonderful effort home seven minutes after the break. Firmino then chipped home over Vicente Guaita for his second of the afternoon.

By this point, Liverpool were 5-0 ahead but never one to miss out on a score-fest, Salah added his own double late on to seal an emphatic win for the visitors. He nodded home his first in the 81st minute before sending a stunning effort home three minutes later.

Tottenham suffered a second defeat in as many games as Jamie Vardy’s penalty and Toby Alderweireld’s own goal gave Leicester a 2-0 victory propelling them to second place in the Premier League table.

At the end of an even first half, Serge Aurier, barged into Wesley Fofana in the Spurs box and, after a VAR check, a spot-kick was awarded, which Vardy duly slotted home.

The Foxes thought they had gone two clear at the start of the second half, when James Maddison converted a long pass forward, but VAR spotted an offside. However, the otherwise impressive Alderweireld gave Leicester another helping hand on 59 minutes, turning Vardy’s header into his own net, after the striker out-jumped Moussa Sissoko.

Everton piled more misery on Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal with a 2-1 victory at Goodison Park.

Everton took the lead when Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s flicked header from Alex Iwobi’s cross deflected off Gunners captain Rob Holding and into his own net , but Arsenal levelled with Nicolas Pepe’s penalty after Tom Davies’ foul on Ainsley Maitland-Niles.

Everton went into half-time ahead thanks to Yerry Mina’s near-post header from a Gylfi Sigurdsson corner, and Arsenal came closest in a quieter second half as David Luiz hit the woodwork with a deflected effort after Jordan Pickford had fumbled a cross.

Arsenal stay 15th, with just 14 points from 14 games after losing five of their last seven in the Premier League.

Manchester City dug deep for an important 1-0 victory at Southampton as Raheem Sterling’s first-half goal proved to be the winning one.

Sterling’s goal was a classic City move instigated down the right flank by Kevin De Bruyne and finished by the England forward. De Bruyne has now collected 15 assists in the Premier League in 2020.

It is also six clean sheets in Manchester City’s last seven games with the axis of John Stones and Ruben Dias continuing to impress.

Aston Villa celebrate Traore goal.

Sam Allardyce suffered defeat in his first game in charge of West Brom as Aston Villa took full advantage of Jake Livermore’s red card to secure a 3-0 victory at The Hawthorns.

Anwar El Ghazi poked Villa ahead with five minutes on the clock and the Baggies were left with a mountain to climb before the break when Captain Livermore had a yellow card for a lunge on Jack Grealish upgraded to red following a VAR review.

West Brom showed great spirit in the second half to stay in the game as long as they did, but Villa’s numerical advantage eventually told as Bertrand Traore’s classy strike and El Ghazi’s second from the penalty spot wrapped up a comfortable derby win.

Sheffield United were four minutes away from their first Premier League win of the season but Danny Welbeck rescued a point for Brighton in a 1-1 draw.

The Blades did it the hard way too with having to play 50 minutes with 10 men after John Lundstram was dismissed following a VAR review for a dangerous tackle on Joel Veltman.

In what has been the worst start to a season in top division history, Chris Wilder’s winless side thought substitute Jayden Bogle had scored an unlikely winner on his Premier League debut.

However, Brighton, who looked to be struggling for inspiration, nicked a late equalised when Welbeck fired home from close range and they hit the post in injury time when Alireza Jahanbakhsh somehow missed from close range.

Ten-man Fulham weathered Joachim Andersen’s second-half sending off to secure a battling 1-1 draw at Newcastle.

Fulham were the better team in the first half at St. James’ Park and deservedly led at the break thanks to Matt Ritchie’s unfortunate own goal.

Everything changed on the hour-mark for Fulham as centre-back Andersen clipped Callum Wilson’s heels, conceded a penalty and, after a VAR review, was shown a straight red card for the last-man foul.

Wilson converted his eighth goal of the season from the spot but it failed to inspire Newcastle to victory as Fulham claimed a hard-fought point that lifts them out of the relegation zone of goal difference.
