Parliament Happenings Brought International Shame To Ghana’s Democracy- NDC

The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Aseidu Nketiah, has intimated that, the happenings that took place after the dissolving of the 7th parliament and the issues that surrounded the election of the New speaker of Parliament, brought international shame to Ghana’s democracy.

Speaking during a press conference to address issues related to the election of the Speaker of Parliament and fall outs associated with what transpired on midnight of 7th of January, he stated that, the events preceding the election of the speaker has cast dark doubts about the country’s democracy and has exposed the undemocratic tendencies of the Akufo-Addo led administration.

“Indeed, some of these events, caused serious embarrassment to the Ghanaian people and brought international shame to our democracy, which was once the envy of many nations.”

He intimated that, the events which took place on the 6th and 7th January, led to they the NDC, wondering how the country’s once enviable democracy had sank and continues to be deliberated.

He also stated that, what happened in parliament, brought to the light of Ghanaians all the NDC has been complaining about since the declaration of the electoral results.

He then placed on record, the NDC’s total condemnation of the acts of connival to abuse judicial processes, intimidation, raising disregard for the 1992 constitution of Ghana and the naked act of robbery against the laws of Ghana which took place during the election of the speaker.

Mr. Aseidu Nketiah explained that, the actions by the members of the NDC was to ensure that, the right thing was done during the voting process.

Touching on the military invasion in parliament, he posited that, it was a deliberate attempt by the New Patriotic Party to suppress the NDC members from acting.

“When it became clear, that the NPP side could not have their way in flouting the rules, the MP for Bimbilla and the outgoing Minister of Defence, ordered armed ‘commandos’ from the military and the police with assistance…to invade the house and push away the gallant NDC MP’s who occupied the house to prevent vote rigging.”

He further commended the Members of Parliament of the National Democratic Congress for their display of strong resilience which led to enabling peace prevail in the chambers.

The General Secretary of the NDC further disclosed that, as the truth prevailed in parliament, they are also confident that, in a matter of time the truth shall prevail with regards to the petition filed by John Mahama in connection with the 2020 elections.

He said also that, it is their hope the outstanding parliamentary anomalies will be resolved fast to help vindicate NDC, having a clear majority in the 8th Parliament of the fourth republic.

The party further called for a full enquiry, to be instituted by the Speaker of Parliament into the unfortunate events of  January 7 in parliament, particularly the invasion of the chamber of parliament by gun welding military men and the snatching of ballot paper by Honorable Carlos Ahenkorah and to also punish those who are found culpable of the laws of the country in order to fore stall any such occurrence in the future.
