December in Ghana 2025 Launched to Unite Diaspora and Boost Tourism

Hon. Abla Dzifa Gomashie, Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture

The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, in collaboration with the Ghana Tourism Authority, has officially launched the 2025 edition of December in Ghana, a flagship cultural and tourism initiative aimed at celebrating Ghana’s heritage, fostering diaspora unity, and driving sustainable tourism growth.

The event, held at the Jubilee House in Accra, was led by the Chief of Staff at the Presidency, Hon. Julius Debrah, under the auspices of President John Dramani Mahama’s administration.

Speaking at the launch, Hon. Debrah described December in Ghana as a strategic national programme designed to strengthen the country’s creative and tourism industries through innovation, inclusion, and sustainability.

“This initiative is more than a celebration. It’s a key part of our national development strategy. We urge all Ghanaians to support this vision to build a stronger, tourism-driven economy”

He explained that the government’s broader “Reset Agenda” recognises tourism as a central pillar of economic transformation, creating jobs and positioning Ghana as a leading destination for culture and leisure in Africa.

The Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Hon. Abla Dzifa Gomashie, highlighted that the 2025 edition of December in Ghana will focus on environmental sustainability. She noted this year’s theme aligns with the government’s green development agenda and the need to protect Ghana’s natural resources while celebrating its cultural diversity.

“This year’s December in Ghana is centered on environmental sustainability. We are urging everyone to help maintain a clean, healthy environment as we celebrate our heritage”

Madam Gomashie emphasized that the tourism sector has the potential to balance economic growth with environmental responsibility, noting that activities throughout the festive season will integrate eco-friendly practices and community participation.

Tourism Drive

Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Mrs. Maame Efua Houadjeto, reiterated the importance of the initiative for national development and private enterprise. She expressed that December in Ghana creates opportunities for local businesses, artisans, and creatives to participate in an expanding tourism economy.

“These events not only boost tourism but also open up significant opportunities for private businesses and local entrepreneurs,” she said.

Mrs. Houadjeto added that the Authority is working closely with creative industry stakeholders to ensure that tourism growth translates into sustainable livelihoods for Ghanaians, particularly in regions hosting major events and festivals.

With a rich calendar of concerts, heritage tours, and cultural festivals, December in Ghana 2025 is expected to attract thousands of visitors from across the world, reaffirming Ghana’s reputation as Africa’s preferred destination for heritage tourism.

New Governing Board For Memorial Park

In a related development, the Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Hon. Abla Dzifa Gomashie, has inaugurated a new governing board for the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park in Accra.

She commended President Mahama for appointing a competent and visionary team to preserve and advance the legacy of Ghana’s first President and Pan-African icon, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

The board, chaired by Mrs. Anne Asantewaa Sackey, includes Collins R. Nunyonameh Ph.D, Dr. Michael Mensah, Paul Parker Atitsogbui Esq., Abraham Eghan, Bob Denis Ahiagble, Fafa Afua Adinyra, Belinda Alijata Suleman, and Awudu Lah Jnr. Baguah.

Speaking at the ceremony, Madam Gomashie charged the board to uphold transparency and ensure the park’s sustainability as a world-class heritage destination. “The survival or otherwise of this institution depends to a large extent on you,” she said. “You are more than equal to the task, given your individual accomplishments in life.”

She stressed that the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park is not only a historical site but also a symbol of Ghana’s enduring contribution to global liberation and Pan-Africanism.

“To be entrusted with the stewardship of this monumental site is not an honour we take lightly. Our mission is clear: to preserve the legacy of the park while enhancing it as a world-class destination for education, inspiration, and tourism”
