The alarming nature of the current surge in the virus has got many health professionals and individuals calling for enforcement of stricter restrictions and for the adherence of the safety protocols by citizens.

Notable among the health professionals is the Ghana Medical Association which has reiterated calls for citizens to ensure strict compliance to the protocols describing the rate at which the virus is increasing as alarming.

The General Secretary of the Association further described the rate of reinfection in people as a situation which is ‘getting out of hand’ and has appealed with the general public to bear with the health professional by adhering to safety measures to help stop the spread.

“It’s not a very good situation, let me put it that way. And it is a caution to us that the situation, as mentioned by the President, is getting out of hand and we all must play our part.

“And another worrying trend is that we are getting some reinfections, with this huge number of being infected and being treated and being discharged, we are getting people who were well treated and discharged, and all of a sudden, they come back and they die.”

The Deputy General Secretary also disclosed that the mortality rate with regards to the COVID-19 is also going up adding that it was not a good situation and so call on all citizens to play their part in helping fight this fast-spreading pandemic.

“As you can see the mortality is also going up, if you check on their [the Ghana Health Service] website, at the very last time we were like 350 around 15 January but now we have about 367.”

According to reports, over 350 doctors have been infected with COVID-19 since the outbreak of the viral disease in the country in March 2020 with some losing their lives.
