ILO becomes member of International Aid Transparency Initiative (IATI)

The International Labour Organization (ILO) has now become a substantive member of the International Aid Transparency Initiative (IATI).

ILO joins a growing number of United Nations agencies and international development bodies in committing to promote greater transparency in the use of development and humanitarian resources to address poverty and crises.

Through the use of easy, accessible and comparable data, the IATI Standard supports greater accountability in the use of resources and the outcomes from their use, which will benefit both the ILO’s constituents and the international development community more widely.

As a full IATI member from January 1 2021, the ILO’s functions will be geared towards deepening and strengthening its information, monitoring and reporting to IATI, as well as evaluation of progress towards achieving decent work outcomes and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“This important step builds on a longstanding principle of openness, transparency and accountability in ILO operations. Publishing data to initiatives like IATI gives the ILO and its constituents better insights into how the organization invests its resources to make decent work a reality for all.”

Furthermore, ILO’s membership with IATI gives it increased opportunities to share knowledge and tools, to improve its own data management and transparency. It will also provide ILO with the needed platform to help shape global transparency as it works with other UN agencies, civl societies, multilateral and bilateral donor organizations, governments and private sector organizations.

Theo Van de Sande, the Governing Board Chair of Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed ILO to IATI. He further highlighted such an addition ILO will be to the group.

“We are very pleased to welcome ILO to IATI’s growing membership. By joining IATI, ILO will play an essential role in improving the availability of transparent, open data required to deliver sustainable development outcomes.”

This giant step made towards greater transparency is in conformation with the agreement made between the UN sustainable group and Member States under the UN Funding Compact to improve reporting, impact measurement, system-wide evaluations and transparency.

“ILO’s membership underscores once again the strong and continuing commitment of the UN system to providing open, transparent data and moves us another step closer to the Secretary-General’s goal of all UN entities publishing data on their work to IATI”.

Joseph Barnes, IATI Governing Board Member, UNICEF.

IATI is a global initiative to improve the transparency of development and humanitarian resources and their results for addressing poverty and crises.

IATI brings together governments, multilateral institutions, private sector and civil society organizations and others to increase the transparency of resources flowing into developing countries.

IATI provides data standards that ensure that all organizations that distribute or spend resources are to publish information about their development and humanitarian activities. The IATI data standards are a set of rules and guidance to ensure information is easy to access, understand and use.

The International Labour Organization became a signatory to IATI in 2012 and since then, regularly publishes data on its voluntary funding flows to IATI. It also sends reports to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development and the UN.
