Reading Time: 3 mins read
Yaw Tog has set a new record as he is now the first Ghanaian musician to ever reach 1 million streams for his music video on YouTube within the first three days of release.

Yaw Tog, a Ghanaian hip hop artist.

Fast-rising music star, Yaw Tog, has asserted that Drill music which is taking over the musical airwaves in Ghana will not fade away anytime soon.

This follows some Ghanaians tipping the genre of music to leave the music scene very soon. However, Yaw Tog during an interview noted that he is going to keep the Drill music alive come what may.

“Drill isn’t fading anytime soon. Besides it’s not the only genre of music that I do. Even so, I’ll make sure to revive it anytime I see it’s going down. So, it’s not leaving anytime soon”.

Yaw Tog

Speaking about the genesis of his music career, he revealed that he used to play football in 2018 but his mother advised him to put a stop to it because of how unsafe it was. He also noted that Kwesi Arthur played a major role in his music career. He emphasized that Kwesi Arthur has been a great inspiration to him.

“So, I stayed at home for some time and I started listening to music. Then I heard Kwesi Arthur and I was I can also do this. So, I started but I was doing it secretly from my mum. But when she realized she advised me to finish schooling. After that, then I continued with the music. But then, in my spirit, I had this conviction to just write and here we are now”.

YAW TOG’S HIT SONG

Touching on his hit song, ‘Sore’ he disclosed that it was a message to Ghanaians. Especially netizens who argued that the ‘Kumerica’ movement which started last year will die off within weeks.

“When the whole ‘Kumerica’ brouhaha started, several people said it wasn’t going to last. Especially on Twitter. But one day I woke up and I got the message ‘Sore’ [wake up]. I already had the beat and I was contemplating whether to do it or not. Because I feared people will laugh at me. So, later I decided to just write it and called some of the ‘Asaaka’ guys and it turned out to be a hit”.

Yaw Tog

His hit song ‘Sore’ currently has 2.1 million views on Youtube within a week of its release. People started comparing his achievement to that of Sarkodie. Based on this, he admonished Ghanaians not to compare him with Sarkodie since, according to him, Sarkodie was in the business way before he joined and has achieved more than him [Yaw Tog].

 THE ‘ASAAKA’ GROUP

There were some rumors that he was taken out of the ‘Asaaka’ group but he clarified that it wasn’t a group in the first place. Also, he emphasized that they only called on each other for collaborative work purposes but since they are all a hit now they barely do the collaborative work.

He also disclosed that the ‘Asaakaa’ Drill music stemmed from ‘Santase’, a suburb in Kumasi. He further revealed why rap music flourishes in that town.

“I think the reason why we thrive in music especially rap is that whenever we set an agenda before us, we try every means possible to make sure it’s fulfilled. That’s the motivation”.

Yaw Tog

The young musician, Yaw Tog, who is currently a final year student of Opuku Ware Secondary school in Kumasi mentioned that one major challenge he faces in the music industry now is pressure to make sure he delivers. He also stated that he sometimes gets overworked. However, according to him, he has a great management team that sees to his welfare.
