Weekend Review: Manchester City beat Tottenham to win 4th Carabao cup in a row

Manchester City have won the Carabao Cup for a fourth year in a row after a 1-0 win over Tottenham in front of 8,000 fans at Wembley.

City dominated the first half, missing several chances to take the lead. Amongst the chances,;Raheem Sterling saw a close-range effort blocked by Eric Dier whiles Phil Foden’s shot deflected off Toby Alderweireld to hit the post.

Finally, the breakthrough was found in the second half with eight minutes to go. Kevin De Bruyne delivered a perfect free-kick to the far post for Aymeric Laporte to head home;and send 4,000 City fans wild.

For Tottenham, however, their 13-year wait for a trophy goes on.

Arsenal 0-1 Everton

Meanwhile in the EPL, Everton ended their 25-year wait for a win at Arsenal;with a 1-0 victory over the Gunners.

After a rather dull first half, the Arsenal thought they had;been;awarded;a second-half penalty when Dani Ceballos was fouled;by;Richarlison. However, Nicolas Pepe was deemed offside in the build-up upon VAR review and the decision was;rescinded.

With 14 minutes remaining, Richarlison run past Granit Xhaka down the right and tried to find Calvert-Lewin with his cross. The ball, though, ricocheted through the legs of the Bernd Leno and went over the line for Everton’s winner.

Liverpool 1-1 Newcastle

Joe Willock scored a dramatic stoppage-time equalizer to secure Newcastle a 1-1 draw against Liverpool at Anfield.

The hosts started strongly with Mohamed Salah giving them the lead after the third minute with a sumptuous finish.

Jurgen Klopp’s team were wasteful in front of goal, failing to score again;despite registering a further 21 shots on Newcastle’s goal.

Newcastle grew in confidence and thought they had equalized through Callum Wilson,;but VAR disallowed the goal as the ball hit his arm before he scored. The equalizer however came, in their final attack of the game. Joe Willock – who scored the winner in the victory against West Ham last weekend;– popped up to strike home a deflected effort to earn Newcastle a point.

West Ham 0-1 Chelsea

Timo Werner’s first-half strike helped strengthen Chelsea’s grip on the top four with a 1-0 win at West Ham.

Chelsea’s winner came just before half-time through Werner’s first Premier League goal;since mid-February, finishing off at close range from Ben Chilwell’s low cross.

The game opened up in the second half as Werner missed a fine chance to double his tally from close range. West Ham were then;reduced to 10 men with as Balbuena was;dismissed when studs caught Chilwell’s calf.

Chelsea managed to see the game out, meaning Thomas Tuchel’s side are fourth, now three points clear of fifth-placed West Ham.

Leeds 0-0 Man Utd

Manchester United and Leeds played out a rather dull 0-0 draw at Elland Road, with both sides registering few chances.

United came closest to scoring in the first half when Marcus Rashford’s free-kick was well saved by Illan Meslier.

Leeds’ best chance also fell to Helder Costas in the second half, but his deflected effort flashed over the bar.

The result means Man Utd are 10 points behind their rivals City in second place, meaning that City only require two wins from their final five matches in order to clinch the Premier League title.

Wolves 0-4 Burnley

Chris Wood’s first-half hat-trick helped Burnley beat Wolves 4-0 win at Molineux.

Chris Wood opened the scoring for Newcastle with a low shot into the corner, capitalizing on an error by Wily Boly. Burnley were buoyed by that and six minutes later, Wood doubled their lead after another error this time by Adama Traore.

Just before half-time, Wood headed home his and Burnley’s third from a corner kick, becoming only the second player to score a Premier League hat-trick for Burnley.

In the second half, Wood, with an incredible performance, dribbled across the face of goal before setting up Westwood, whose powerful drive flew beyond Patricio for Burnley’s fourth goal.

Aston Villa 2-2 West Brom

Keinan Davis’ late strike denied West Brom a vital victory in their battle against Premier League relegation as they drew 2-2 at Aston Villa.

West Brom started the game brightly but went behind inside nine minutes when Semi Ajayi was penalized for a foul on Ross Barkley in the penalty box. Anwar El Ghazi cooly converted the penalty to give Villa the lead.

West Brom grabbed an equalizer in the 23rd minute through a penalty of their own after Ezri Konsa clipped the feet of Ainsley Maitland-Niles. Matheus Pereira fired home the penalty to see West Brom level.

The visitors then turned the game around as Konsa’s poor control allowed Mbaye Diagne through, and his cross was then turned into his own net by a sliding Tyrone Mings.

Aston Villa in response, mounted pressure on West Brom and got an equalizer in the final minutes through Davis’ first Premier League goal.

Sheffield United 1-0 Brighton

Relegated Sheffield United secured only their fifth Premier League win of the season as David McGoldrick’s first-half strike was enough to clinch a 1-0 victory over Brighton at Bramall Lane

McGoldrick’s winning strike came as a series of attempted clearances and ricochets allowed the striker to shoot on the turn and wrong-foot goalkeeper, Robert Sanchez.

Brighton, who remain in 16th place, were denied an equalizer upon VAR review when Jakub Moder found the net from an offside position as Graham Potter’s side missed the chance to go 10 points clear of the relegation zone.
