Funds unavailable to replace obsolete equipment- ECG

Transmission lines

Director of Communications for the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), William Boateng has disclosed that funds are presently unavailable to replace obsolete equipment for the company’s operations.

Speaking in an interview, he admitted that ECG has a number of obsolete equipment which needs to be replaced.

“Admittedly, we have obsolete equipment we need to replace;but because we don’t have the funds to do so presently,;we can’t take them off the system as they will only give us problems. We will still have to use an old transformer which needs to be changed because it is functional.”

William Boateng

Likening this obsolete equipment to phones being upgraded on a regular basis to offer more flexibility,;the ECG Director of Communications said,;“I may not have the funds to replace my old phone to the latest edition but so far as it performs all the basic and critical functions, I can keep using it until I have enough money to replace it and that is the same thing with our equipment.”

Mr. Boateng further advised the citizens not to assume the company has the money to replace its old systems.

“We will keep using and maintaining our old systems which work until we have enough to replace them.”

Also speaking on maintenance schedules, he insisted that his outfit has one of the best maintenance schedules in the country. Also

According to him, the ECG has scheduled maintenance programs; which are undertaken on a regular basis to ensure efficiency and effectiveness in power distribution.

“We have timetables with which our district and substation transmission teams work with to ensure maintenance is done on our lines and substations regularly.”

ECG has no leadership challenge

Touching on leadership issues in the company, he disclosed that the ECG has no leadership challenge.

His statement comes on the back of the recent agitations initiated by the staff of ECG for the removal of their Managing Director, Kwame Agyeman-Budu.

“We have no leadership challenge. The Union has the right to voice out if there is a problem and there is no consensus. If you make decisions with your leaders and there is no consensus, things like this can spring up. But it is something that they petition the board so it has been taken to the board level. As I speak to you, things are calm while we try to settle the issue.”

William Boateng

The Communication Director further averred that his outfit at the ECG will take a part of the blame as it failed to engage more with the workers to prevent this outcome.

“It is our task to get into more engagements with the workers and give them up to date information on the direction of the company, and policies that may cause a delay in certain decisions.”

William Boateng

The Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) and Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has assured Ghanaians of their commitment to quickly complete all ongoing projects on time, to bring relief to its electricity distribution system and customers.
In a joint statement issued in Accra by the two companies, they stated that key projects that are currently underway in the Greater Accra, Central and Ashanti regions will enhance power supply reliability in the country.
