Meghan and Prince Harry welcomes second child

M.Cby M.C

Reading Time: 4 mins read
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have announced they are expecting their second child. The couple, who live in the US where the baby is likely to be born, have shared a black and white picture of themselves, sitting under a tree, with Prince Harry resting his hand on Meghan's head as she lay in his lap cradling her bump. A spokesperson for the pair said: "We can confirm that Archie is going to be a big brother. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are overjoyed to be expecting their second child." Meanwhile, the Queen, Prince Philip, Prince Charles and the whole Royal Family are "delighted" and "wish them well", according to a Buckingham Palace spokesman. The news of Meghan's pregnancy comes after the duchess suffered a miscarriage last July. Meghan, revealed her heartbreak in November in a deeply personal article for the New York Times, writing: "I knew, as I clutched my firstborn child, that I was losing my second." The duchess was widely praised by charities for sending a powerful message to others who have lived through the same trauma by speaking about the issue. Harry and Meghan's new baby boy or girl will be eighth in line to the throne, just behind their son, one-year-old Archie Mountbatten-Windsor. The couple have been hoping for a sibling for him. In 2019, Harry said he would only have two children for the sake of the planet. The pair, who were married at Windsor Castle in May 2018, quit their roles as senior working royals in March 2020 as they sought financial freedom. They are no longer actively using their ‘His/Her Royal Highness’ (HRH) titles and now live in Montecito, California. Harry, retained his place as sixth in the line of succession despite giving up royal life. The new baby is allowed to be a Lord or a Lady, but, in keeping with Harry and Meghan's wishes, will be a Master, like Archie, or Miss (first name) Mountbatten-Windsor instead. Meanwhile, the news of a second child for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex brings with it the likelihood that this baby will be born in the United States of America. That notwithstanding, it brings up some constitutional advantages to the unborn baby should the birth take place in the United States. Birth in America will confer citizenship upon the new child, who will also be 8th in line of succession to the throne of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, along with 15 other nations, including Canada. Interestingly, the infant could potentially qualify to be both a sovereign, by accession, and also be free to run for the presidency of the United States. This will be the first significant child to be born to the British Royal Family in the United States.

Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, has given birth to her second child with Prince Harry, welcoming a daughter in California.

The couple’s press secretary said in a statement: “It is with great joy that Prince Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, welcome their daughter, Lilibet ‘Lili’ Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, to the world”.

According to the statement, both mother and child are healthy and well, and settling in at home.

The press secretary noted that Lilibet was born on Friday morning, June 4 at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in California. The press secretary through the statement also mentioned that the child is named after Queen Elizabeth, Harry’s grandmother, “whose family nickname is Lilibet”.

Why Lilibet

Lilibet was coined when Queen Elizabeth was just a toddler and couldn’t pronounce her name properly. Her grandfather, King George V, would affectionately call her Lilibet, imitating her own attempts to say her name. It soon stuck and she became Lilibet to her family from then on.

The Queen’s late husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, also called her by the nickname, and wrote to his mother-in-law after their wedding: “Lilibet is the only ‘thing’ in the world which is absolutely real to me.”

Baby Lili’s middle name, Diana, is in tribute to Prince Harry’s late mother, Princess Diana, who died in a car crash in 1997 when he was 12 years old.

In a message of thanks on the couple’s Archewell website, they said: “On June 4, we;were blessed with the arrival of our daughter, Lili. She is more than we could have ever imagined, and we;remain grateful for the love and prayers we’ve felt from across the globe. Thank you for your continued kindness and support during this very special time for our family”

The couple have a 2-year-old son, Archie, and wished to;thank the public “for your warm wishes and prayers as they enjoy this special time as a family.”

It is worth mentioning that Lilibet is eighth in the line of succession for the throne. Harry and Meghan’s children do not have titles like “Prince” or “Princess” because only the;grandchildren of the monarch have those titles, although Queen Elizabeth made an exception for William’s children since they are in the direct line of succession.

Royals congratulate Meghan and Prince Harry

That notwithstanding, Buckingham Palace and some other royals have taken to social media to congratulate the couple and welcome the new baby.

Prince William and Catherine who are the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge tweeted about the birth. They used their go-to royal term “delighted” in congratulating the Sussexes on the arrival of baby Lili.

We are all delighted by the happy news of the arrival of baby Lili.

Congratulations to Harry, Meghan and Archie.

Meanwhile, Queen Elizabeth II hasn’t given an official statement but The Royal Family, the official Twitter account for Buckingham Palace, posted about the birth. It was more of a group message, speaking for the Queen, Prince Charles and Camilla, and Prince William and Catherine.

Congratulations to The Duke and Duchess of Sussex on the birth of Lilibet Diana! The Queen, The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall and The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted with the news.
