Ghanaian reggae artist and radio presenter, Blakk Rasta has waded into the bullion van attack conversation as he claims that policemen are paid 125 Ghana cedis for escorting the bullion vans.
This follows armed robbers attacking a bullion van carrying money and, in the process, killing a police officer, an eye witness (trader) as well as injuring the driver of the van at James Town.
Speaking on the issue, Blakk Rasta took a swipe at the leaders of the country. According to him, the leaders and even the Inspector General Police (IGP) have been cruising in bulletproof cars. He further lamented how innocent lives and citizen’s hard-earned money are placed in assailable cars with a common padlock.
“It’s so unfortunate that a bullion van carrying people’s cash and innocent lives is not bulletproof. Yet, your Ministers and VVIP in this country have bulletproof cars, houses, and whatever. The thing is the police are paid 125 Ghana cedis to follow bullion vans in this country. The money is not for a day, it is for the whole week. How much is that in dollars? Just 15 dollars a week”.
Blakk Rasta also took a swipe at the Ghana Police. He mentioned that the police in the country will now see the urgency of the #Fixthecountry demonstration they have been against. According to him, they should get ready for the demonstration.
“You [Police] were telling us that our demonstration, #Fixthecountry is not urgent. So, the police you can see that we need a demonstration and it is very urgent. If not before you realize that the demonstration is very important and urgent, then I am afraid that many more will go down the drain”.
Nonetheless, this is not the first and maybe not the last incident of armed robbers attacking bullion vans. Many other similar incidents of bullion van robberies have become rampant in Ghana because of the weak nature of these vans which the banks use.
That notwithstanding, social media has been in a state of mixed reactions following the news of the bullion van attack.
Several tweeps have taken to the microblogging platform to vent out their frustrations about the rising rate of insecurities in the country. According to some social media users, leaders and especially law enforcers of the country need to be proactive. They explained that they don’t have to wait for a deadly incident before they think to act.
That notwithstanding, some stated that it is for some of these reasons why they are in support of the #Fixthecountry campaign. According to them, there have been several cases of armed robbery, however, the Ghana police are not intensifying security patrol to ensure that such malice is curbed. Therefore, they will keep pressuring the leaders to do something about security in the country.
Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police, James Oppong-Boanuh has threatened that they will withdraw Police escort from banks that will fail to secure properly armored bullion vans for bulk cash transportation.
“IGP is reminding the Association of Bankers that they have to provide fortified armored vehicles for transporting their currencies by close of June 2021 as earlier agreed between them and the Police Service. Else, the Police will withdraw their officers for escort duties”.
