VGMA 2-days event kicks off, some artist bags awards

The 2021 edition of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards is underway. The two-day event has already kicked off with electric performances from Yaa Yaa, Okyeame Kwame, Cina Soul, Kofi Kinaata among others.

The 2021 edition of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards is underway. The two-day event has already kicked off with performances from Yaa Yaa, Okyeame Kwame, Cina Soul, Kofi Kinaata among others.

That notwithstanding, the first day of the Ghana Music Awards saw some artists bagging awards in various categories they were nominated for.

Sensational singer, Yaa Yaa bagged the award for the ‘Music for good ‘category. Before receiving her award, Yaa Yaa opened the awards show when she gave an electric performance.

That notwithstanding, the ‘Best Instrumentalist of the year’ was awarded to Nana Yaw Sarfo.

Also, the award for the ‘Best Male vocal performance’ was given to the contemporary gospel music star, MOG. It is worth noting that this his second time in a roll of winning this particular award.  It can be recalled that last year he waded off stiff competition from the likes of Joe Mettle, Kuami Eugene, KiDi, and King Promise to win the award. Well, this year he seems to have done the same as he was nominated alongside KiDi, Joe Mettle, Akwaboah, Kyei Mensah, and Kingsley Amporful.

Speaking of winning consecutive times, singer and songwriter, Kofi Kinaata won the award for ‘Songwriter of the year’ for the fourth time. He first bagged this award in 2016, then in 2017 and last year. He has been unmatched and has continued to show his writing prowess time and again.

Meanwhile, skyrocketing singer, Abiana has just had her first taste of the prestigious Vodafone Ghana Music Awards as she emerged as the ‘Best Female vocal performance of the year’. This just puts to bear the fact that, Abiana is indeed a force to reckon with.

Nonetheless, the award for the ‘Record of the year’ was bagged by amazing songstress, Adina. Receiving the award, she gave a very brief but emotional speech as she dedicated the award to her late father. According to her, the record was made in his memory, therefore it felt right to dedicate the award to him.

That notwithstanding, ace producer and record label manager, Richie Mensah, is already in the lead with two awards. He emerged winner of the ‘Sound engineer of the year’ and ‘Producer of the year’ category. Winning in these categories is not new to the producer since he has in the past years win such awards.

Nevertheless, legendary musical artist, Bob Pinodo received the ‘Lifetime achievement’ award. This award is presented to musicians who have impacted the music industry over the decade. Some past winners of this category include Dr. Mrs. Mary Ghansa, J.A. Adofo, Professor Kofi Abraham, and George Darko.

Well, Mzvee who recently made her comeback into the music scene after a long break came back stronger. She emerged as the winner for the ‘Best Music Video’ of the year for her song ‘Baddest Boss’. The song which features Mugeez was shot and directed by Master JC.

The award for the ‘Group of the year’ was presented to the music duo, Keche. This didn’t come as a surprise to several people as the artists in several interviews had tipped themselves to win in that category.

Nonetheless, South African singer and DJ, Master KG bagged the award as the ‘Best African artist’.

As expected, Nanky who is VGMA ‘Unsung’ artist of the year debuted on the mega platform. He gave a stellar performance and he was applauded for it.
