GHS cautions severity of 3rd wave over non-adherence to protocols

The Ghana health Service has cautioned that, the country risks a high and severe third wave of COVID-19 outbreak if the public continues to ignore the safety protocols.

Speaking at a presser in Accra, Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye,;the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS),; stated that Ghana has already entered into its third wave and indications point to the fact that much more would have to be done to avert a disaster of catastrophic magnitude.

“A lot more has to be done to ensure that we don’t get to the situation we recorded in February and March this year.”

Speaking on the recent rise in the number of cases, he averred that the nation has witnessed a surge.

Dr Kuma-Aboagye said there has been significant increase in the number of cases recorded over the past four weeks,;with a number of them being in severe and critical conditions.

The GHS Director General said 248 persons are currently on admission of which 17 are in critical condition, 86 severe, and 143 mild to moderate.

He further noted that as at July 25, 2021,;the country have recorded a cumulative case of 102,569 and 1,412,464 tests are conducted.

Out of that figure, he said, 97,213 had recovered with 4,983 still being active cases and 823 deaths.

2,249 international arrival cases recorded

Touching on international arrivals, Dr. Kumah Aboagye also said, 2,249 persons have tested positive out of the 390,527 tests conducted. Similarly, a total of 392 schools he disclosed had recorded cases with a cumulative figure of 2,647.

However, he indicated that 93.7 per cent of them have fully recovered with 166 of them still active. Also

“The 166 students, 93 are from schools in the Ashanti Region,;38 from the Oti Region, Greater Accra 15, Eastern 12, Bono East seven, and Bono 1.”

Dr Kuma-Aboagye further said there was the need for all Ghanaians to take the situation seriously and act responsibly by adhering strictly to the preventive protocols.
 He said quantities of vaccines were expected to arrive in the country by August and September,;however, until then, obeying the protocols would be the way out.

Stakeholders effort in COVID fight

As Ghana toggles between mitigating the spread of the virus in the country and making efforts to procure vaccines,;the number of cases unfortunately keeps increasing.

In this regard, various stakeholders have called for the adherence of the safety protocols by citizen to help combat the virus and prevent it from escalating its current stand.

Adding his voice to the call, the President of Ghana,;H.E Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo noted that safety protocols were either relaxed or ignored and as a result reintroduced it.

President Akufo-Addo therefore urged the citizenry to adhere to the protocols for the country to emerge victorious in this fight against COVID.

Also, some stakeholders have also intensified the COVID education in various regions as part of efforts to mitigate the virus and also educate the citizenry on the new variants that have emerged in the country. Also
