Ejura committee clearly overstepped their mandate- Economic Fighters League

National spokesperson for Economic Fighters League, Nii Aryee Opare, has disclosed that the three-member committee set up to probe the Ejura violent protest, have overstepped their mandate. Following this, they have rejected the findings of the committee.

Social activist, Ibrahim Mohammed, populalry known as Kaaka Macho.

National spokesperson for Economic Fighters League, Nii Aryee Opare, has disclosed that the three-member committee set up to probe the Ejura violent protest, overstepped their mandate. Following this, they have rejected the findings of the committee.

Among the issues raised by the League, Mr Opare noted that the committee had no reason for determining the scope surrounding the death of Kaaka Macho.

Mr Opare indicated that the revelations from the committee is tantamount to putting a spoke in the work of the police. Also, he explained that the whole posture of the committee “was not really set to find justice”.

“We saw that the committee clearly overstepped their mandate. In that, the [responsibility] of members of the committee was to investigate the occurrence [and] disturbances in Ejura and to make recommendations on how we can prevent future occurrences. But we saw that the committee went ahead to do the work that seems to be left out for the CID, by making certain specific pronouncements.

“One of it was to already declare some people guilty even before they had a fair trial. So, we saw that the posture of the committee is actually not one that is set towards finding justice. That is why we had our suspicions in the beginning. But the final report that came out clearly justified some of our reservations we had in the beginning, that it was biased [to] some extent”.

In justifying his reason for stating that the committee overstepped its mandate, the Economic Fighters League spokesperson explained that, the committee during the probe sought to investigate the “disturbances that happened in Ejura”. As such, how can the committee start making “pronouncements into an ongoing investigation?”.

“So, it’s based on these lapses and inconsistencies…”

Commenting on what the economic fighters will do with the rejection of the report by the family of Kaaka, Mr Opare indicated that they will support the family in seeking justice.

“Rightfully so, we believe in justice and that is all what we are asking for. So, all the legal options that are available on the table, we are looking to explore them and we are solidly behind the family. Because Kaaka was indeed part of the movement, he was a fighter and he was part of FixTheCountry campaign. Indeed, we believe and we know rightly that he was attacked and killed because of his social activism. Yes, we support the family… and we are solidly behind them”.

Family of Kaaka considers legal action against Ejura Committee

The family of murdered activist Ibrahim Mohammed alias Kaaka Macho has announced their intention to sue the three-member committee set up to probe the Ejura protest.

Speaking at a press briefing today, October 4, 2021, spokesperson for the family, Abdul Nafiu Mohammed, revealed that legal actions will be taken against witnesses who appeared before the committee.

According to him, the committee was wrong to suggest that Kaaka was killed due to a family feud rather than his social media activism.

He insisted that the Justice George Kingsley Koomson committee was not mandated to investigate the death of their relative.

“We are disappointed that a committee charged with such an important national duty so shamefully failed to uphold the most basic value of impartiality and due diligence.

“We are also disappointed that a committee supposedly chaired by a Justice of the Court of Appeal failed to show the minimum level of legal awareness and a sense of judicial restraint. Instead, the committee completely abandoned the due process and showed zero respect for the fair trial rights of persons currently arrested in connection with the police inquiry into the death of Kaaka”.
