Social media has been met with controversy as reactions flood various platforms after the overall Best Farmer for the Accra Municipal Assembly received bicycle as an award.

In the video seen, the awardee was invited by the Municipal Chief Executive and was given a bicycle, a knapsack sprayer, and other farming products.

However, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly stated those were not all the items presented to their Overall Best Farmer, a backyard farmer at Korle Bu.

This unexpected turn of events contrasts the customary presence of a tractor, automobile, or harvesters, all of which could have aided the farmer and some social media users are in a frenzy over this situation.

While some debated that the award given to the best farmer is not deserving, others argued that the farmer does small scale farming, therefore the award given him is useful.

@barna_b: “Honestly this is a disgrace. They should have just honored him with a citation and a cash price that would have been better than this wacky thing in the name of an award”.

@e.bruce_thompson: “The event itself is costs more than the award that was given the farmer”.

@bert_: “If they know they can’t give an honorable award to the farmers, then they should desist from organizing the event entirely. How do you award the best farmer a bicycle? What should she use it for? Where are the tractors and other machines and equipment’s they used to award?”

@elph_: “If you think about it critically, the farmer was given what will help him do his job. So I don’t think there is anything wrong with this. Some of you are only overacting”.

The Agricultural Manufacturing Group (AMG), presented a cheque for 20, 000 Ghana cedis to the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA), towards the celebration of the National Farmers’ Day.

Presenting the cheque, the Sales and Marketing Manager of AMG Fertilisers, Mr. Isaac Berchie, noted that the company was annually associated with the National Farmers’ Day celebrations and is committed to supporting the development, promotion, and recognition of farmers through these celebrations for the long term.

That notwithstanding, Chemico Limited, one of Ghana’s leading Agro-inputs company supported the celebration with over 250,000 Ghana cedis.

The company handed over a cheque of 100,000 Ghana cedis to the Ministry of Food and Agriculture and additionally presented some cash amounts and agrochemical products valued at over 150,000 Ghana cedis to some Regional, Metropolitan, Municipal, Directorate of Crop Services and District Directorate of the Ministry towards their local celebration of the 37th Farmers’ Day.

Based on just these few mentioned support given to the Ministry, concerns have been raised as to where and how the fund was disbursed. Especially seeing as the Best Farmer of a Municipality given just a bicycle and other few items.
