The National Youth Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), George Opare Addo, has debunked claims that the party implored the #FixTheCountry Movement to join its upcoming ‘Yentua Demonstration’.

According to him, as a political party, the NDC already has an appreciable number of support and followers, and as such does not need any significant help or association to ensure a successful operation.

Mr Addo explained that convener of the FixTheCountry Movement, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, was actually the first to express interest in the collaboration, only to rescind on his decision sometime later. He indicated that Mr. Barker-Vormawor was pushing for the NDC to organise a press conference on the need for a new constitution, a move the party refused.

Ghana Has No Thinking Center: Dr Aku Kwapong Proposes National Economic Development Corporation to Champion Development

“We did not create a coalition. People came to us. I listened to Oliver and I’m a bit disappointed because the level of conversation we had and what he’s putting out is not a true reflection of events. I reached out to Oliver, not the National Democratic Congress. I reached out to him as a friend and I discussed with him that his voice has been heard on E-levy. Initially he agreed, only for him to call just last night that his members are telling him that he cannot join. So, all he’s saying is much ado about nothing. And mind you, the FixTheCountry organization is not bigger than the NDC”.

George Opare Addo

Mr Opare Addo noted that the FixTheCountry convenor is creating the impression of a big organization, making the national youth organiser of the NDC question how big the FixTheCountry is and their history in the country.

NDC to embark on a street protest against e-levy

It will be recalled that on February 3, 2022, the Youth Wing of NDC announced its plans to embark on a street protest against the Electronic Transactions Levy (E-levy) on Thursday, February 10, 2022. The protest dubbed ‘Yentua Demonstration’ will start at 7am at the Obra Spot.

A letter signed by the National Youth Organiser of the Party, George Opare Addo, explained that there is an urgent need for them to protest the tax policy, saying “the young people of this country are frustrated and tired of the happenings in the country”.

Among other things, the protest is to ensure government rescinds “its desperate efforts on the Electronic [Transactions] Levy, end widespread corruption, redeem young people from mass unemployment, pay outstanding arrears to workers and end the UTAG endless strike immediately”.

Following this, the #FixTheCountry Movement and the Economic Fighters League declined an invitation from the NDC to participate in the upcoming protest. The #FixTheCountry Movement, emphasized that its outfit cannot participate for the fact that the protest is being handled by a political party.

The Economic Fighters League explained that its decision to abstain from the demonstration is hinged on the NDC’s refusal to resist the controversial tax from the onset.

Reacting to these developments, George Opare Addo underscored that the slated protest is in the interest of all Ghanaians, hence the need for all concerned citizens to support the NDC Youth wing to impress it on government the need to scrap the E-levy Bill.
