Security Analyst, Mr. Paul Boateng, has advised the current and successive governments to explain their policies to the people in order for them to relate. This, he believes, will deter them from thinking of staging a coup d’état.

Commenting on the President’s call for peace at the 65th Independence celebration, Paul Boateng averred that the suggestion of a coup should be a wake-up call to government and every Ghanaian. He stated that it is a challenge for the entire government and Ghanaians to know that some people are likely to use illegal means to topple government and that is not good.

The security analyst partly attributed the reason for the coup alarm on the current economic situation. He stated that the luxurious lifestyle of some government officials in this current economic state has triggered some of the coup alarms threatening to topple government.

“But it’s up to the government to explain its policies to us and that may change the minds of Ghanaians. I strongly believe that they [government] have picked their intelligence because some appointees, immediately they acquire these positions they start buying cars and building houses. However, before these appointments, they did not have such monies.”

Mr. Paul Boateng

The security analyst noted that “some of them don’t even think of how they spend because the monies are not coming from them and these are all factors”.

According to Mr. Boateng, since everybody is complaining about the economy, it is up to government to change the situation.

“The signs are there. Listen to the comments of the people. They should reduce their spending and explain their policies to the people of Ghana.”

Government has not addressed underlying issues

According to Mr. Boateng, government has not taken time to address the underlying issues causing the suggestion of coup. He intimated however, that the underlying issues which have not been resolved is as a result of polarization the country experiences in terms of the kind of partisan politics in the country.

“Because if one tries to point out some of the issues being faced, they tag you as being NPP or NDC. So, people who have genuine concerns and are willing to address these concerns are afraid of coming to address them because of some kind of insults from people who see the criticism as a weapon directed at them.”

Mr. Paul Boateng

The Security Analyst was also of the view that addressing the challenges facing the country have become a bit of a challenge due to the opposition by some persons when the issues are raised.

“In dealing with these kind of issues, some can even go to the extent of enacting laws to ban individuals. It’s not only a challenge for the ruling government but all of us.”

President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at the 65th Independence Day celebration in Cape Coast, called for the protection of the peace and stability of the country at all times.

According to him, citizens must guard jealously the peace and stability Ghana is enjoying because there are some restless spirits seeking to exploit the current difficulties confronting the nation.

President Akufo- Addo averred that either the absence of faith in the prospect of democratic alternatives to the current government or their impatience to wield executive authority are the factors driving their appetite for the short cut of military intervention.

“The great majority of us who are committed to democratic values and institutions will continue to resist the claims of these adventurers and deploy all legitimate means in our democracy to maintain our free, open system of governance which has respect for human rights, the rule of law and the principles of democratic accountability”.
