General Secretary of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), Dr Titus Beyuo, has urged the public to be cautious during the celebration of the Easter festivities, bearing in mind prevalence of COVID-19.

Dr Beyuo revealed that despite the fact that Ghana has only recorded 32 active cases, with no critical or severely ill people and empty treatment centres, it is imperative people heed to basic COVID protocols to avert the escalation of the virus. He explained that although vaccination is still ongoing, some persons are still not vaccinated. With this, he advised those who are yet to have their vaccinations to make use of the opportunity available at the various health centres and get vaccinated.

The GMA General Secretary noted that even with just three cases in the country currently, things can escalate. Therefore, it’s vital Ghanaians protect themselves.

“The only thing we want to say is that as we go about celebrating, we should be a bit mindful. We are celebrating the Easter for first time in about two years without getting restrictions which is good news, but people should still take personal responsibility concerning their health and in relation to COVID. We are asking that if you’re having any symptoms, please make sure you use your mask before you go into a public space or into an indoor event”.

Meanwhile, Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has called for togetherness as Ghana and the rest of the world seek solutions in the post-Covid era. In an Easter Message, Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu prayed this Easter season brings people the strength to go through trials and temptations amid the struggles for success.

“The Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ affirmed His supremacy over life’s tribulations. God created us in His own image and likenesses. So, do we possess the power to triumph over trials and tribulations that confront us from wherever”.

President Akufo-Addo urges Ghanaians to exercise discretion

Prior to this, President urged Ghanaians to celebrate the Easter holidays with caution, despite the lifting of all COVID-19 restrictions by the government. In a message ahead of the long Easter weekend, he indicated that although the country’s infection rate had dropped drastically and there were no critical or severe cases at hand, Ghanaians should be careful and measured when they gathered over the festive period.

President Akufo-Addo emphasized that the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ, which signified the supreme sacrifice made for humanity, should reconcile all to God. He opined that the promise of salvation and eternity in heaven, were what was offered Christians who fought the good fight, finished the race and kept the faith.

The President admonished Ghanaians to be “inspired and guided” by the promise of salvation “in the face of the current difficulties confronting our nation”. The Government, President Akufo-Addo highlighted, was working hard to restore Ghana back into the path of progress and prosperity that the nation was charting before the onset of COVID-19, whose negative consequences had been exacerbated by the effects of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
