Expert Admonishes Parties Not To Downplay EIU Report

Political Marketing Strategist, Divine Akwensivie

Political Marketing Strategist, Divine Akwensivie, has intimated that the EIU report and all the predictions it entails is of much relevance and shouldn’t be downplayed.

According to Divine Akwensivie, before the 2020 elections, the EIU came out with predictions and some of the predictions came to pass, as such, the importance of the recent report cannot be downplayed. He stated that all the political parties will have to take the report serious based on the credibility of the agency that is producing the report.

“When you look at EIU, basically what they did was to look at 5 risk indicators. They looked at the currency risk indicators, they looked at the banking sector risk, the economic risk factor and the suffering risk factor of the country etc. They put all this five together and determined the overall risk factor of the country and based on that, they were able to make a prediction.”

Mr. Akwensivie indicated that it is important to understand that the data for the analysis was collected in 2020 and the EIU made the projection based on what happened in 2020, as such, some indicators may be based on old data. According to Divine Akwensivie, a lot has happened between 2021 and 2022 so, the dynamics will change.

However, according to the Political Marketing Strategist, not many of the projections the EIU made for 2021 has come to pass. “So, really, predictions are good, research is good because you can’t downplay the importance of such an institution.”

The Political Marketing Strategist stated that the time frame the report centered on, the nation experienced COVID-19 situation and had also come out of an election, so there was expenditure on the part of the government. “At the time the report was written, there was no expectation of what is happening currently in Russia and Ukraine.“

Party has noted issue in report

Deputy Communication Director of the NPP, Kamal-Deen Abdulai, speaking about how confident the government is, in ensuring that the challenges stated in the report is dealt with so as not to affect its election performance, Mr. Abdulai stated that the party has noted the issues raised in the report and will work in that regard. “As a party, we have welcomed it, read and looked at it and we have looked at certain things that are said in it and juxtaposing same to our actions from now till 2024.”

According to the Deputy Communications Director, strategically, the NPP thinks that predictions are good and has welcomed them. He averred that what makes the predictions good is that it makes political parties involved sit up. “EIU has made three predictions in the past and it has come to pass. So, it tells you that they do not just churn out reports just because they want to.”

Mr. Abdulai stated that the indicators used in the report to make the predictions has always been the argument and there has always been those risk factors. He stated that although the risk factors in the report is to be considered, the deciding factor will be dependent on the voter.

Kamal-Deen Abdulai asserted that the floating voters will take into consideration factors but the core party members will focus on harnessing votes for the party they support during elections. “If our core voters are maintained and properly kept and then apathy is not seen like we saw in 2008, I have no doubt [NPP will win].”
