Legal Practitioner and a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) legal team, Abraham Amaliba, has insinuated that the state institutions under the current administration which are supposed to serve the nation have become compromised.

Abraham Amaliba stated that the display by some men claiming to be National Security officials during the NPP delegates elections yesterday, April 28, 2022, goes to prove the NDC’s claims that there are still vigilante men in the system. “Times without number has the NDC complained of recruitment of vigilantes into the security services and this is an example of it.”

“I think that it is becoming one too many that this administration is allowing this vigilante bits to go hay wire. The audacity with which they do some of these things is detracting from the building blocks of our democracy.”

Lawyer Amaliba stated that it is about time the President deals with the vigilante menace as he is about leaving office, particularly with those who have been recruited into the National Security Service. He suggested to the President to conduct an audit of all those recruited into the system because most of them have no qualification.

Acts by party members, not democratic

Commenting on the happenings during the elections, Lawyer Amaliba questioned whether the nation has progressed due to the nature in which the democracy of the nation is panned out. According to him, the acts carried out by some party faithful’s of the NPP and some security personnel during the first day of the delegates elections was not democratic in anyway.

“The elections were characterized by attacks on EC officials, attacks on Police and then removal of peoples names from the album. Then you’ll want to find out if 30 years on after the approval of the constitution, we have progressed or we have retrogressed.”

Lawyer Amaliba insinuated that there is a certain trend that is happening in the NPP where “violence has become something of a cherished commodity”. He stated that it is not a surprise to see these unacceptable acts taking place.

According to Mr. Amaliba, a cursory look at all the constituency centres around the country point to a particular issue running through the elections which is, the deletion of people’s names front the album which is causing problems. However, he stated that a political party that prides itself as a party with so many lawyers, cannot sit down and deal with this particular issue.

“So, what we saw yesterday was a snowball of effect of all the gamut of complains that were happening and took place and the parties could not address all those things. So, you see that yesterday in some constituencies, either the elections were postponed, there’s an injunction or there were attacks on EC officials.”
