Never winning VGMA ‘Artiste of the Year’ doesn’t mean I have failed– Kofi Kinaata

Kofi Kinata, has advised that creatives be pushed into parliament. The 'Susuka' hitmaker made this assertion during an interview

Ghanaian hiplife and highlife musical artist, Kofi Kinaata.

‘Confession’ hitmaker, Kofi Kinaata, has noted that he’s not a failure if has not won ‘Artiste of the Year’ at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA).

According to the popular Highlife artiste in an interview,  there are a lot of better artistes who never won Artiste of the Year in their entire lifetime but still make good music. He posited that indeed winning the prestigious award gives an artist some sort of leverage, however not winning it doesn’t make an artist a failure.

“As for Artiste of the year, there are a lot of better artistes out there who never won artiste of the year in their entire musical lifetime. Not winning Artiste of the year doesn’t mean I have failed because it’s some people who have come out with an awards scheme to reward musicians”.

Kofi Kinaata further speaking averred that several artists were nominated for the ultimate award however, at the end of the day, only one person won the award. He was also quick to add that it doesn’t mean “people will stop listening or downloading your songs if you don’t win it”.

Kofi Kinaata who has won multiple awards at the VGMA is yet to be crowned as the ultimate Artiste of the Year winner after missing out narrowly to Kuami Eugene at the 2020 edition.

In the same vein, Kofi Kinaata spoke about missing out on winning the Songwriter of the Year award.  According to him, winning that particular award on four different occasions doesn’t mean he writes good songs than every artist. The ‘Susuka’ hitmaker was of the view that he doesn’t think he’s better than other artists in terms of songwriting just because he has won several awards for that.

“I’ve said that awards shouldn’t define your success because winning songwriter on four different occasions doesn’t mean I write good songs than everyone in Ghana. If you win it great but we shouldn’t focus so much on awards and say that if you can’t achieve this or that it means you have failed as a musician in your lifetime. When you win awards bravo, that’s great, but that should not define the success or otherwise of an artist in their musical journey or their lifetime”.

Kofi Kinaata failed to win the Songwriter of the Year award at the 23rd edition of the VGMA after Fameye’s song titled ‘Praise’ was adjudged the finest in the year under review.

Kofi Kinaata is one of the few artists who has not been involved in any musical ‘beef’. Recently he was called out by an artist, Ayeasem, for ignoring him after Ayeasem asked him for a collaboration. Several people thought Kofi Kinaata would react to the claims, however, he totally ignored it.

Speaking on the subject, Kofi Kinaata emphasized that he will never engage in ‘beefing’ with anyone in his entire musical journey.

“You can see that in my music career I don’t engage in beefing, anything that would bring beef between me and someone I try to avoid. Because where I come from, even going into music, they didn’t want to allow me, they felt they don’t want any dissing or quarrels in our home,” Kofi Kinaata explained.
