The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMA) has disclosed that there will be cloudy conditions with slight intermittent rains over southern Ghana in the early parts of Sunday, May 22, 2022.
According to the GMA, breaks of sunshine will be observed as the day progresses and there’s a possibility of rain over few areas in the evening.
“Northern half on the other hand, is expected to experience cloudy conditions this morning and also giving way to sunny intervals as the day progresses with few areas experiencing thundery and rain activities later in the evening”.

Temperatures in Accra are expected to be low at 24 0C and will rise to 32 0C in the afternoon before dropping to 29 0C in the evening. There is a 60% chance that Accra will experience slight rains on Sunday morning. The GMA also warned that there is a 40% chance of some parts of Accra and Kasoa experiencing thunder storm and rain later in the evening.
There is a 60% chance of areas in Cape Coast, Takoradi, Axim, and Ho also experiencing slight rain falls this morning but sunny intervals are expected in the afternoon with partly cloudy conditions in the evening.
Parts of Accra submerged amid heavy downpour
Meanwhile, as the rains set in, the inhabitants of Accra and other coastal areas in the country are warned to remain vigilant and to follow the forecast from the GMA. Already, Accra has started experiencing floods even though more rains are expected in the coming days.
About Five hours’ heavy rainfall yesterday, Saturday, May 21, 2022 in Accra, caused severe flooding, and disrupted activities in many parts of the capital city and beyond.
Some of the affected areas include the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange, Spintex, Madina road, the Sahara Park in Adabraka, Ablekuma, parts of Teshie, the Obetsebi Lamptey roundabout and parts of Dzorwulu.
A number of frightened traders run to seek shelter under the median of the interchange in Circle as others waded through the flood waters to board vehicles to their destinations on saturday.
Some passengers, who were using the interchange to other destinations, preferred to walk in the rain to avoid the huge traffic that built up due to the downpour.
Commercial vehicles from the Obra Spot ‘Trotro’ Station in Kwame Nkrumah Circle, had to wait a little longer because the floods blocked the road leading to Paloma Bus Stop.
The popular Las Palmas eatery was not spared as the ravaging flood waters took over the entire ground floor forcing customers who were eating to abandon their meals for safety on the second floor of the two-storey building.
Meanwhile, some parts of the Spintex Road were also heavily flooded forcing stores and businesses along the road to close abruptly.
To avoid any danger, some motorists parked their vehicles, and had to wait for the level of water on the road to subside before continuing their trips.
Some parts of the Tema Motorway were also flooded which forced some drivers to use only the outer lane of the Tetteh Quarshie Roundabout to Tema.
Heavy vehicular traffic on Sunday morning
Meanwhile, as a result of the heavy downpour on Saturday evening which resulted in huge flooding at Accra, there was a huge gridlock on the Accra – Madina road on Sunday morning.
The flood left a section of the road inmotorable, as such, motorist from the Madina to Accra end of the highway had to divert onto the inner lane of the opposing road. Some roads were inundated by flood waters, leaving commuters stranded.
Several vehicles have been stuck in the rains while others were being washed away. The situation has also led to heavy vehicular traffic, especially in the affected areas, with many drivers staying in traffic for several hours.
With the Ghana Meteorological Agency predicting more heavy rains in the coming days, the perennial flooding in Accra will remain a concern for residents, bearing in mind the dreaded June 3 disaster almost 7 years ago.
On June 3, 2015, torrential rainfall, which affected most parts of the country, flooded the Kwame Nkrumah Circle. Reports indicate that fuel leakage from the Goil Service station in the area and fire from a cigarette stub, caused the devastating fire and flood catastrophe which resulted in the death of 154 people with several others sustaining various degrees of injuries.
