Ashanti Region Showcases Economic Strength at Global Mayors Forum

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has projected the Ashanti Region as a beacon of economic vitality and cultural heritage at the 2025 Global Mayors Forum in Zhengzhou, People’s Republic of China.

Addressing an international audience of city leaders, policymakers, and innovators, Dr. Amoakohene extended greetings from President John Dramani Mahama and the people of the Ashanti Region, underscoring Ghana’s renewed commitment to sustainable development and international collaboration.

Dr. Amoakohene expressed gratitude to the Government and people of China for hosting the global event and providing a space for constructive dialogue on urban renewal and cross-border cooperation, while emphasising the pivotal role the Ashanti Region plays in Ghana’s economy.

“The Ashanti Region, one of Ghana’s sixteen administrative regions, stands as a pillar of economic vitality and cultural excellence. With a population exceeding six million, it contributes over 20 percent of Ghana’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and remains a key driver of national growth and innovation”

He explained that the region’s capital city, Kumasi, continues to thrive as the country’s second-largest metropolis and a vital commercial gateway linking the middle and northern corridors of West Africa.

He described Ashanti as richly “endowed with gold, bauxite, and manganese,” alongside fertile lands that support diverse agricultural ventures and agro-processing opportunities.

Sustainable Mining and Environmental Responsibility

Touching on the theme of sustainable development, the Minister acknowledged both the promise and the challenges associated with the region’s natural wealth.

He lamented the destructive effects of illegal mining – locally known as galamsey – which continues to damage water bodies and forest reserves. “This issue often involves both local and foreign actors, including, in some cases, Chinese nationals,” he added.

He contrasted this with China’s environmental consciousness, citing the cleanliness of Zhengzhou’s rivers and the greenery of its forests as examples worthy of emulation.

Dr. Amoakohene stressed the need for responsible mining practices, reminding foreign investors that Ghana’s laws permit international participation only through legal and environmentally sound frameworks, avoiding partnerships that damage the country’s environment and communities.

He praised companies such as Newmont Ghana and AngloGold Ashanti for their adherence to Ghana’s mining regulations and their contributions to responsible exploration.

“Distinguished participants, development is not only about infrastructure. It is about building lasting relationships that connect people, ideas, and opportunities. The Ashanti Region welcomes investors, innovators, and partners who share our vision of inclusive and sustainable prosperity”

Cultural Exchange

In reflecting on the forum’s theme – “Preserving the Cultural Legacy of Ancient Capitals and Driving Urban Renewal” – Dr. Amoakohene drew parallels between the historical evolution of Henan Province and that of the Ashanti Region.

He recounted his visit to landmarks such as the Henan Museum and Shaolin Temple, describing them as symbols of resilience and transformation that mirror Ashanti’s own story of endurance through slavery, colonisation, and post-independence nation-building.

“In the Ashanti Region, we share a similar story. Our monarchy, led by His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, remains an enduring symbol of unity, heritage, and cultural pride”

He called on global leaders to balance innovation with heritage preservation, asserting that cultural identity must not be lost in the pursuit of modernisation. According to him, true urban renewal must integrate both progress and tradition, creating sustainable cities that honour their historical roots.

Dr. Amoakohene concluded by reaffirming Ashanti’s readiness to collaborate with partners who share its vision for inclusive growth and sustainable prosperity. He described the Global Mayors Forum as not only a platform for city-to-city collaboration but also an opportunity to forge meaningful cultural and economic partnerships that benefit future generations.
